Next week the House Committee on Energy and Commerce will be trying to figure out how to square climate-change policies and economic competitiveness, a road the Senates already been down. On the Hill, a lot of people look to Europe for lessons on how to do battle with climate change. Its certainly instructive.
It aint easy being green.
Today, the 27 nations of the European Union took their first whack at Europes more ambitious climate and energy proposals. The new rules call for a big increase in the amount of renewable energy and would sellnot give awaypollution rights to big industry. Surprise: No country seems very satisfied with the tougher talk.
Even the Swedes are picking apart the spreadsheets, AFP reports:
Sweden, which has the highest renewable energy target under the commissions plans, gave a mostly warm reaction to the package but stressed that the price of actions should not outweigh the benefits. It is important for all of us that we achieve a cost-effective way of meeting the overall objective, Swedish Energy Minister Maud Olofsson told EU colleagues.
Everybody has a beef, AFP reports: Romania worries tighter environmental regulations will drive industry even further east; Finland wants special treatment for peat forests; coal-flush Poland wants Europe to push cleaner fossil fuels, and so on.
As U.S. policy-makers roll up their sleeves and go to work on a definitive climate-change bill, its worth keeping in mind thatin terms of energy politicsthe U.S. isnt that different from Europe. Theyre both made up of disparate energy regions, each with a different fuel mix and thus different political loyalties.

$ounds like they're losing their Religion...
Temperatures are headed down on average globally.
Time to declare victory in the war on global warming — and put an end to the effort.
Here’s how to be a winner politically. Make lots of speeches where you “care” about the environment. Then do absolutely nothing about it. The market will eventually take care of it. That’s why only rich countries have the luxury of worrying about it. Poor countires are too busy worriying about where their next meal is coming from People love to think they are making a difference and that they are a good person by being “green” but relatively few people want to drive Yugos and use one square of toilet paper. But we should make a big show of patting these kinds of people on the head and telling them “what a good boy you are”. Because that’s what leftists are, little spoiled children. Put a gold star on their foreheads and send them on their way. And then let the grownups run the world.
You know I’ve seen that crying French guy my whole life, but I never noticed the lady next to him clapping as the Nazis roll through Paris. What’s wrong with her?
Fact is, their ain't no global warming and the corrupt IPPC's computer models aren't any more realistic than the "Super Mario Brothers" computer models.
Such a bunch of junk science BS and such a bunch of grubbing hustlers and politicians (but I'm being redundant) trying to cash in on this scam before it is obvious to everyone it is the biggest lie every told.
Pretty much normal. She got laid for the next 4 years by a lot of 20 something German soldiers, got all the food she needed, and at the end of it all, got a new hair style.
French women can be very pragmatic. :~))
Very well said. This could be a short thread. You’ve said it all.
That’s Nancy Pelosi’s mom.
