A Conservative in the Academy

by: Bethany Stotts, February 29, 2008

If the common saying, “if you are young and not liberal, then you have no heart; but if you are old and not conservative, then you have no brain,” holds true, then why are our academies littered with aging Marxists and radical feminist professors? ...Professor Ron Lipsman, author of Liberal Hearts and Conservative Brains: the Correlation between Age and Political Philosophy, argues that “typical traits or signature qualities” of liberal “overgrown adolescent[s]” include

1. He does not learn from his mistakes

2. He does not take responsibility for the consequences of his actions

3. He is prone to temper tantrums and fits of whining.

4. He thinks his ‘elders’ are stupid.

5. He behaves recklessly.

6. He is totally self-centered.

In his book, Lipsman finds these traits in political figures such as Jimmy Carter, Howard Dean, the “Peoples Republic of Maryland” Democrats, and Vietnam War protestors, arguing that each of these figures matches the above criteria. “The persistent insistence of liberals on labeling Republican presidents as stupid is a damning piece of evidence supporting my argument that liberals behave like overgrown adolescents,” the University of Maryland professor argues. He notes that liberals have historically labeled “stupid” not only the ideas of George W. Bush, but also Ronald Reagan, Gerald Ford, and George W. H. Bush.

Those looking for hard facts, studies, or data to back up these assertions should look elsewhere, as the author openly states that the intent of the book is not to create “a weighty political tome, replete with cross references, annotations and data from statistical surveys.”...

Academics, Lipsman argues, often get stuck in liberalism due to ignorance, inexperience, stubbornness, or self-interest. Less frequently they are liberals “whose political principles are born of [dispassionate] examination.”...

My girlfriend is a sociology professor who considers herself to be liberal but seems more conservative to me. She hates the Clintons for bombing her home (Serbia) and says that Reagan brought hope to the Russians and others living under Soviet oppression.

She isn’t thrilled with American liberalism because there is no thought behind it.

If I recall right studies have demostrated that if you start abusing chemicals from alcohol to other recreational drugs at an early age your age of maturity is stunted,
some do not advance beyond the liberal age.

““if you are young and not liberal, then you have no heart; but if you are old and not conservative, then you have no brain,” holds true, then why are our academies littered with aging Marxists and radical feminist professors?”

That question answers itself. Crefully re-read the SECOND part of that old adage and you will understand.

To: bs9021; All

slammin those dems from the old line state r u?

some of my friends are democrats from md.
i can guarantee that they would not sell out
or give away this country.

i think they are going for a slower, more painful
decline.

actually i am going to be visited today by a young MD woman
(sophomore in college) who is an unabashed barackonite,
and revels in talking about how ‘stupid’ GWB is.
i hope to have an enlightening conversation.

less than 350 days until the executive branch of the US government takes a big step to the left. and that would
be if mcain is elected. we will be called france if
barcrak hussein osama is elected.

President Ford had an idea?

He is prone to temper tantrums and fits of whining.

This doesn't sound like a very 'grown-up' observation from a 'dispassionate' researcher.

Mostly a lack of common sense and the ability to stand on ones own two feet. Tenure in academia requires aquiescence and fealty to more senior faculty.

Or as most would say, they just need to develop some big brass ones.

How would you describe one who is prone to temper tantrums and fits of whining?

If I considered myself a dispassionate researcher looking into unique political characteristics....I wouldn't use the meaningless terms "temper tantrums" and "whining!"

Those looking for hard facts, studies, or data to back up these assertions should look elsewhere, as the author openly states that the intent of the book is not to create “a weighty political tome, replete with cross references, annotations and data from statistical surveys.” “I prefer to present the book more in the style of a long op/ed [sic] piece rather than as an academic government and politics text,” he writes.

The author denies your accusations that he considers himself a "dispassionate researcher" but instead that of one with a background suitable to the subject who is simply expressing his opinion.
