High-risk sex offender and transient set loose in Mason County [Washington State]

MASON COUNTY, Wash. -- A level-three sex offender who admits he has preyed on some 20 young victims has been freed, and police don't know where he'll go next.

James Christy admitted to raping or molesting "20 or so victims," the youngest of whom were 5 and 6-year-old girls.

Christy said he provided alcoholic beverages a 14 or 15 year old girl and "had his way with her." He said he also exposed himself to two pre-teen girls he did not know.

In all, Christy said his victims included 15 teenage girls, four girls under the age of 7 and one 10-year-old boy.

He was convicted in 1993 after pleading guilty to two counts of indecent liberties with forcible compulsion for sexually assaulting two young girls he was babysitting.

Christy has served his full sentence and, upon being released from jail, told the Department of Corrections psychologist that he will kill anyone who asks him about his sex offender status.

The psychologist describes Christy as an angry sex offender who is in denial about being a sex offender. Given these factors, officials consider him to be very high-risk and likely to re-offend.

"He knows what he's looking for out there and it's very concerning to see this," said Sheriff Casey Salisbury.

But deputies don't know where Christy will go as he is a transient; there is no physical address for him on any file anywhere. A condition of Christy's release requires him to check in with officers, but only once a week.

Christy, 49, stands 6 feet tall and weighs 188 pounds. He has brown hair and brown eyes.

Christy identifies his victim age range as 5 to 17 years old, but deputies said potential victims include children and vulnerable adults.

The guy should be locked-up again, for threatening to kill someone.

Agreed. There should not be any way within our laws that such offenders should be freed to prey once again upon our society. Either lock ‘em up for life, or execute them.

I hope his next attempt at “forcible compulsion” is met with the deadly forcible propulsion of a firearm.

Damned be the liberal who freed him and the liberal law that would allow it.

Bingo. The minute the words left his mouth I’d have had him arrested.

Arrest Christy and the shrink for conspiracy to commit murder.

There really does need to be some provision in the law for involuntary commitment. Load it up with all the due process you want, but there ought to be some way for a judge somewhere to finally pronounce that somebody is just too dangerous to be free.

Guys like this guy are just too broken to ever be compatible with regular society. Society ought to have some right to say that some people just don’t get to play with the rest of us.

Yes, there’s a problem with a de-facto life sentence for these guys. It’ll reduce the likelihood that they’ll leave victims alive. I’m not sure what to do about that. But we do need to get the idea on the table and figure out how to more effectively handle these predators.

You’re right and perhaps the way to go is to stop thinking in terms of a criminal paying his debt to society. Someone like this is sick, mentally ill, deranged, I don’t know what “terminology” is correct, but sex offenders have the highest recidivism rate. There are laws that someone psychologically deranged enough to be a “danger to self or others” has to be kept locked up. It seems this would apply here. Reclassify these type of sex offenders as more than just lawbreakers.

Remember the case a few years ago? A repeat child molester. The guy was due to be released and pleaded with the judge and the jail counselor to just keep him in prison. In tears he said, “I don’t want to hurt more kids, but I will, I just can’t help it.”

They are sick and cannot be cured.

Actually, sex offenders (as broadly defined by our courts) have the LOWEST recidivism rate of any category of criminal offense. You should do your homework before making these kind of ridiculous statements. Overall, they have the LOWEST rate of reoffense, and there are reasons for that.

These kind of sex offenders as portrayed in this article are in a very VERY narrow and minutely small category of all sex offenders.

Gosh, you should inform the United States Department of Justice. They claim that the recidivism rate for sex offenders is 4 times as high as for other criminals.

Try Googling on "sex offender recidivism".
