Kanjorski says he’s sorry if remarks appeared to offend (comparison to David Duke)

The U.S. representative says he is committed to immigration reform as well.

U.S. Rep. Paul E. Kanjorski, D-Nanticoke, sent a letter to political opponent Lou Barletta on Friday and said he meant no offense to his Republican challenger and is sorry if it appeared that way.

Kanjorski wrote: “Over the next eight months, we will be talking to the press and to the people of Northeastern Pennsylvania about issues that we passionately care about. Inevitably, there will be occasions in which we misspeak or our words are misconstrued.

“One such occasion occurred this week when I spoke to a reporter for the Politico. I did not say you were a racist and did not mean to imply it.”

Kanjorski said he shares Barletta’s concerns about the need for immigration reform, saying he has worked for it and continues to work for it.

“It is an important issue for our country,” Kanjorski wrote. “If people want to be American citizens, they must play by the rules.”

In the story that appeared in the Washington-based Politico, Kanjorski was quoted as saying, “What David Duke was to civil rights, my opponent has done that with immigration. He’s used that issue the same way Duke used the civil rights issue.”

Barletta issued a response to the remark and demanded an apology from Kanjorski. Barletta, who was elected to his third term as mayor of Hazleton in November, has risen to national fame on his stance against illegal immigration.

Kanjorski and Barletta are unopposed in the Democratic and Republican primary elections, respectively, and are headed for a November showdown. In 2002, Kanjorski defeated Barletta by 22,000 votes.

It's been falsely reported that David Duke endorsed Barletter. In fact, someone posted an endorsement for him on David Duke's website.

Anyone checked yet to see how long Kanjorski’s grandfather was in the Ustashe?

Kanjorski needs to go in the worst way.

One great piece of legislation in 1993 was brought forth by Jim Inhofe when he was in the house to end the secrecy of the ‘discharge petition’. (http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?res=9F0CE0DF1330F937A2575AC0A965958260)

I will never forget the night he brought it up in special orders in the house. Kanjorski almost swallowed his teeth and basically said it was NOT the publics business what they did in congress.

Get him out! Go Barletta.

Inhofe has also introduced the same bill in the senate to end their secret discharge petition practice.

I agree; he needs to go. Thanks for the link; I wasn’t aware of that.

Here’s another one: http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0907/5667.html

Kanjorski: "I did not say you were a racist and did not mean to imply it."

Oh yes you did, and you know it.

And can we get everybody to ban the use of the words "immigration reform"? We all know that it means amnesty - period.

Liberals never cease to amaze one when it comes to their total misuse of the language. "immigration reform", "undocumented immigrants", "progressive" rather than liberal, "moderates".

Kanjorski has been corrupt for nearly two decades. His side businesses and those of his friends and relatives profit in a way that John Murtha might envy. He keeps getting re-elected because the morons on Luzerne County will vote Democrat even if Beelzebub was running.

The one thing that will make the landslide loss of McCain and the Democrat blowout in Congress a little more palatable will be if Barletta beats Kanjorski.

Fine with me if they use "progressive" ~ that was used for a long time to mean "COMMUNIST".

They want to be called Commies, go to it.
