WASHINGTON -- Rolling Stone is backing Democratic Sen. Barack Obama for president, the first time the music magazine has endorsed a contender for the White House during the primary.

"The reason for the early choice is twofold," the editors explain in the publication's upcoming issue. "Undoing the damage of the disastrous Bush years will take a leader who can unite a deeply divided nation, and politicians with gifts like Obama's are so rare that it's imperative for each of us to do our part."

The magazine has endorsed presidential candidates since 1972, beginning with Democrat George McGovern. Other recent candidates include Democrats Bill Clinton, Al Gore and John Kerry.

"Obama has emerged by displaying precisely the kind of character and judgment we need in a president: renouncing the politics of fear, speaking frankly on the most pressing issues facing the country and sticking to his principles," wrote Jann Wenner, the magazine's editor and publisher.

Wenner called Obama's rival, Hillary Rodham Clinton, a "capable and personable senator," but criticized the way she has run her campaign.

"Her campaign certainly proved her experience didn't count for much: She was a bad manager and a bad strategist who naturally and easily engaged in the politics of distraction, trivialization and personal attack," Wenner wrote.

Obama appears on the magazine's cover next to the headline, "Barack Obama: A New Hope." In the image, his pose his Superman-like and an aura surrounds his frame. The issue hits newsstands Friday.

Well, after months of bashing Bush and every GOP candidate by idiot hater writer Matt Taibbi, the biggest surprise of the year...Rolling Stone endorses Barack Hussein Obama! I mean, when was the last time the magazine had a fair, objective political article without four letter words and childish insults for the GOP candidates?

Actually, he was originally their second choice, right after this guy:

I know, they will endorse the GOP candidate if the Republican endorses child sacrifice and devil worship. LOL

I read one article where they applauded Sean Penn for meeting and greeting Chavez. Rolling Stone magazine is about ass***s, written for ass***s, by ass***s, and read by ass***s.

Matt Tabbibi was to political writing as Jack Kevorkian was to resuscitation.

My old college roommate in Texas saw Obama on Monday night at a high school in Carrolton, Tx. She said he is the candidate of the Youtube generation. She said he is very smart and eloquent with very scary ideas like he wants to pay for everyone to go to college.

She also doesn’t see McCain being able to beat him.

The Rolling Stone letters to the editor are scary. I am really worried about when the Gen Y generation takes over.

The only surprise is that they didn’t endorse Hugo Chavez for US President and call for a rapid amending of the US Constitution to allow it.

"politicians with gifts like Obama's are so rare that it's imperative for each of us to do our part."

I would not say that "politicians with gifts like Obama's" are rare. Granted, they are in Latin America or Middle East, so since Chavez and Co are ineligible to participate...

I think McGovern was touted as just about the same thing to young people, in 1972.

Any Rolling Stone endorsement is the kiss of death for a politician...it means one is down with the crazies and druggies and America haters.

The letters are only coming from the handful of clueless leftards who read that piece of asswipe. Why the hell it even delves into politics at all is beyond me.
