On the town of Davis, CA, I have been there many times. Pretty neat place even though I don't agree with their liberal politics. There is a nice downtown with unique stores and places to eat at. One thing I can give the town credit for, they won't let Wal-Mart in and the other, they are very bicycle friendly as in having separate bike paths and having the paths all over the town.

Authorities found what appears to be two homemade pipe bombs in a dorm room last night after getting an anonymous call reporting them. Approximately 400 students were evacuated from the Tercero B dormitory, directed to wait in the nearby dining hall. The bomb squad from Yolo county was called out. Agents from the FBI and ATF as well as members of the Sacramento County bomb squad are also assisting. Police say after questioning four students they arrested 19-year-old Mark Woods, a freshman from Torrance. He's being held on suspicion of materials with the intent to make an explosive or destructive device and other charges. Officials now have a search warrant and are going through the student's dorm room. They are attempting to determine how to dispose of the bombs, either detonate them in place or remove them and dispose of them elsewhere. ~snip~

I work at UC Davis and am presently approx 1/4 mi away from the scene. This place is so “laid back” it would take a hundred bombs going off before they would recognize that they have a problem...even though this campus is #6 in the nation for crime. Just last week the campus conducted a field test of a new notification system incorporating e-mail and telephone automatic notification and most of the people I know didn’t even get notified...much work left to be done on that one. But the kicker is that each of the individual departments are supposed to be developing specific plans to counter various types of threats that may occur yet no time line was established by senior administrators for departmental compliance, just whenever they get around to it. Typical bureaucratic head in the sand approach, not even acknowledging a problem exists and is becoming more of a threat each day. And, while it’s not PC to say so, you can’t recruit kids from the hood and not expect them to have some baggage.

30 plus years ago when the company, I worked for was relocating me, one of the options of where to live was Davis.

Besides not fitting in with the liberatti in Davis, the crime rate was under reported by the campus police and was a concern.

So we opted out, and have been happy we did.
