DAVIS – A student was in custody Thursday following the discovery of explosive devices at the University of California, Davis. Two partially assembled pipe bombs were found in a student's dorm room, university spokeswoman Lisa Lapin said. Authorities believe it was an isolated incident and said there was no need to detonate any devices.
More than 450 students were evacuated Wednesday night from eight dormitories and slept in dining halls or at the homes of family and friends. They were expected to be let back into their dorm rooms later Thursday morning, Lapin said.
Police became aware of the situation Wednesday night after a woman reported that students had possible explosive devices.
Students were evacuated immediately, but police saw no imminent danger of an explosion and waited until Thursday morning to get a search warrant, which requires a judge's signature.
After questioning four students, police arrested 19-year-old Mark Woods, a freshman from Southern California. Lapin said he has been cooperating with authorities.
Woods was being held on possession of materials with the intent to make an explosive or destructive device and other charges and possession with intent to make such a device on school grounds.

My first thought was that if the kid’s name had been Muhammed Achmed or some such, it would have been left out of the story.
Isn’t UC Davis a mainly agricultural school? I’d expect this kind of thing at Berkeley or UCLA, but UC Davis? Shows what I know.

UC Davis is as leftist as it gets. And Davis, CA is one of the most leftist cities in CA. First city in CA to ban indoor smoking, I believe, for example.
I think I can speak on this. Not the first to ban indoor smoking but definitely one of the first to ban outdoor smoking, in parks and withing twenty feet of doors.
Thanks! I graduated from UC Davis in 1991 and I couldn’t remember the exact smoking law that was so groundbreaking.

I live in Davis. Your first two sentences are correct. I have my doubts about the third. I believe we were the first city to ban “outdoor” smoking. You can not smoke outdoors unless you are in transit. If you are smoking you must be moving if you are within 25-50 feet of a business establishment. That means they bust 15 year olds who like to hangout outside coffee houses with their skateboards in one hand and a cig in the other.
We also forced CAL Trans to build a toad crossing when they built a freeway overpass. So far no toads have been spotted using the toad crossing. However, the toad crossing requirement did delay construction and added $12,000 to the cost of the overpass — if memory serves me correctly. Crazy place.

I did a lot of stupid stuff when I was 18, none of it involved explosives though. Mostly stuff like stealing the bird feeder and welcome mat from the University President’s house. That kid has some extra kind of stupid going on.

Explosives were not mentioned in this article. Pipe and possibly threaded end caps but not explosives.

Evacuating 400 students from their quarters was a little extreme for suspected plumbing supplies, don’t cha think?
Mark Woods was also planning a BANK HEIST. He had the makings of THERMITE, which is used to melt through bank safes! The mere fact that he had the stuff proves beyond all doubt that he intended to burn through a bank safe.
I think this whole experience was pretty educational for Mark. I would really like to meet him and help him get going again. He must have done something before the mad-dog bomb incident (where, according to the actual police, there was no actual bomb or explosive device) to totally piss off the UC Davis dean. I wonder if he complained about an unjust parking ticket.
Also, UC Davis is much, much more than an agricultural school. And old friend of mine, Arthur Leonard, was a physics prof there. They also have a medical school (and a veterinary medicine school).
One fact you must learn if you want to graduate college successfully: you must OBEY the authorities there. They have the power to terminate your education: once you are expelled in an incident like this one, it is on your transcript and no other school will admit you. Imagine you are living in North Korea.
