The UN Security Council failed to reach an agreement overnight Thursday on issuing an official condemnation over the deadly shooting attack in Jerusalem's Mercaz Harav Yeshiva because of Libyan opposition.
"Most members (of the council) wanted to condemn (the attack) but Libya blocked it," Israel's ambassador to the UN, Dan Gillerman, told reporters.
US Ambassador Zalmay Khalilzad said US efforts to issue a statement condemning the attack "in the strongest terms" failed because Libya sought to link it to its own resolution urging condemnation of Israel over the IDF operation in the Gaza Strip last week.
Khalilzad criticized Libya, saying that a terror attack specifically targeting civilians could not be equated to military operations aimed at stopping rocket fire.
Ambassador Vitaly Churkin of Russia, which currently holds the rotating monthly presidency of the Security Council, expressed his frustration over the fact that UNSC member states could not come to a decision to issue a condemnations for a terror attack and were instead getting bogged down by complexities over the history of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
"What kind of specific horrendous terror attack in the area will it take to make the Council condemn without going through all the history of the region," he said.
Earlier Thursday, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon strongly condemned the shooting, calling it a "savage attack."
In a statement issued by his spokesperson, Ban deplored the deliberate killing and injuring of civilians and offered his condolences to the families of those killed.
"The Secretary-General is deeply concerned at the potential for continued acts of violence and terrorism to undermine the political process, which he believes must be pursued to achieve a secure and lasting peace for Israelis and Palestinians, based on a two-State solution," the statement said.
What? The UN unable to act decisively? Who could have guessed that would happen!
I condemn the UN and the Islamics.
Better idea. Put them in Sderot, and let them experience what the Israelis do.
Israel out of the UN!
The death of one Arab will shut down UN business for days, whilst most of its members find the most artful way to criticize and punish Israel. 100,000 Israelis could die in an attack, and most of them wouldn't lift a finger unless it was attached to a celebratory drink.
It is long past time for Israel to tell the UN to pork a goat (which isn't an insult to most there, it is merely encouragement). I honestly don't know what benefit it derives from being a member.
No amount of kimchi can cover up the smell of these loser despots over at the UN!
Why would Israel want more hostiles within its borders?
I was thinking more along the lines of either Wrangel Island or the bottom of the Mariana Trench.
Remember that Obama’s mentor and pastor has visited Libya’s dictator and calls him a friend.
We really don’t need to worry. Global Warming is going to cause this huge flood of water into NYC destroying the UN HQ.
I saw it in a movie once, and AlGore said it was real.
“Israel out of the UN!”
Correction: “Israel and the United States out of the UN!”
