New Idea says sorry for Harry story

AN Australian women's magazine has apologised for breaking a global media blackout on Prince Harry's frontline deployment in Afghanistan.

In its latest issue, New Idea magazine says it is sorry it was not "alert to the possible ramifications" of running the story about Harry's secret tour of duty, which appeared in the magazine and on its website in January.

Few people noticed the initial report, but a scandal erupted after US website the Drudge Report picked up the story and broadcast it around the world, breaching an agreed global media blackout.

"We did not knowingly breach any embargo and were not party to any agreement for a media blackout on the story," New Idea says.

"However, and more importantly, we do acknowledge that our actions in publishing the story can be reasonably viewed as insensitive and irresponsible."

The magazine says it acknowledges and regrets "the distress and anxiety felt by readers" over the revelations.

"We regret this serious lapse of judgment," it says.

Magazines like New Idea made a fortune out of Diana, Princess of Wales and other celebrities, but in doing so destroyed all their credibility by reporting gossip rather than news.

The amount of credibility they have is shown by the fact that New Idea published this story in early January - and nobody took it at all seriously.

I can't imagine any American media agreeing to such a boycott.

They certainly did.

Embargos of this type are commonplace and the US media respect them as much as any other. The US also uses them - President Bush’s trips into Baghdad are generally embargoed until he has left Iraq.

Breaching an embargo generally costs a media organ access to certain sources, while following the embargo grants access to greater sources. They are followed out of self interest.

They are breached on occasion, certainly, sometimes accidentally, sometimes deliberately - but far more are observed and agreed to than are broken.

The US media aided in keeping this story quiet for 10 weeks.

Don't worry, sweethearts...only the U.S. will be blamed.

We're getting soooooooooooooo used to it...it won't phase us, either.

You're a good MAN, Harry!

Any outrage over this or are you and your fellow knee jerkers worn out after slamming Drudge?

“New Idea” apologizes for the Prince Harry deployment story.

Promises to make up for it by leaking real military information stolen from the Pentagon.

The fury has gone - it’s old news. Regardless, Drudge bears responsibility for disseminating it globally. No one noticed it when New Idea mentioned it - did you?

Obviously not. After all, Harry was pulled out because of what Drudge did, not for the actions of a minor, obscure publication. Drudge still hasn’t the decency to apologize for what he did.

Spare your ... whatever it is you’re insinuating.
