I did some Internet search and also came up with the similar information. However, this article mentions satellite-fed information.

Either the doctor has some revolutionary technology or a reporter or an interpreter screwed up royally.:-)

Your explanation is undoubtedly the correct one - however not only the journalist but also the spokesperson confounded the two technologies, thus causing the article to lead to all sorts of erroneous inferences on the part of the reader. Thanks.

Per that link the surgical system has NOTHING AT ALL to do with the orbital GPS. It just uses triangulation in a way that is vaguely similar. This article is the most stupid and inaccurate thing I have read in weeks.
