No joke: NYC couple wed by Kathy Griffin Mon Mar 10, 7:44 AM ET
She has been a sitcom character, a sometime talk show host and the centerpiece of her own reality show. Now Kathy Griffin has appeared in an unlikely new role minister.
The often provocative comedian who raised some Christian groups' hackles by joking about Jesus while accepting an Emmy Award last September became ordained through an online church to officiate Saturday at the New York wedding of two fans, Brian Anstey and Elka Shapiro.
"The request came in, and how could I say no?" Griffin, 47, told the Daily News. "I love that this couple just want to have fun. They're my kind of people."
Anstey, 31, is a fifth-grade teacher; Shapiro, 29, is a marketing director. Neither is affiliated with a religion, and "the major factor in our relationship is laughter," Shapiro said.
Griffin flew in from Los Angeles for the wedding at the Queens County Farm Museum. She performed a 10-minute service that ranged from telling raunchy jokes to having the bride recite the reception menu, according to the Daily News.
"It's so unusual and something we'll always remember," Shapiro said.
Viewers of Griffin's reality show, "My Life on the D-List," will be able to see the ceremony for themselves in June, when an episode involving the wedding is to air on Bravo.
Griffin said she was ordained online by the Universal Life Church and completed additional paperwork to meet New York State requirements. But she insisted her role in the wedding was a one-night-only performance.
Besides "D-List," Griffin has appeared as an acerbic columnist on the NBC sitcom "Suddenly Susan" and as a guest host of the ABC talk show "The View."

just shaking my head...
ESPECIALLY if you take a gratuitous shot at Christianity...
bonus for them
She is going out with Wozniak too.
Ugly, untalented, unfunny - what a pathetic person.
Indeed.
Well, at least she went through the Internet to get her license. Neither Al Sharpton or Jesse Jackson have any right to be called “Rev.”.
she’a addicted to plastic surgery as well.
The clerks in Colorado warn you that if you jokingly say you are married once you have your marriage license, for all intents and purposes, you are married. Just turn in the license and that’s it.
When my neighbor remarried her husband (long story) they married themselves.
No priest or minister.
And really, isn’t “nothing” better than Kathy Griffin?
And people wonder why I hate celebrities.
*shakes head*
That’s a face that would not only stop a clock, but make it run in reverse.
Kathy Griffin is the definition of an ugly American. To watch the way she behaves in public is disgusting, to say the least. Even worse to see how she behaved overseas.
I used to like her in small bits...she skewered Orpah in good shape, AND was on a USO tour for the troops...that's always a way to get on my good side. But then I saw a little more of her on her show.....nope. She's just a no-talent, gay-chasing, nasty-tempered hack.
I have been a ULC Reverend for 7 or 8 years. I did it as joke to start with. I have done 6 weddings over the years. All perfectly legal in Maryland. I have enjoyed doing all but one of them.
I got my rev from them too. I kept the papers in m y Bible for several years. Nobody ever asked me to do a wedding though. But, in Michigan, anyone can perform the ceremony with permission of the church leadership.
That sounds like a neat thing to do.
May I ask why you didn’t like doing the one?
My husband’s best friend married another friend and his wife through the ULC, but here in Colorado, you don’t even have to have that.
Additionally, there is no blood work, no waiting period, no nothing. You pay your ten dollars, you walk around the corner and say “Sure”, sign & turn in the license, and you’re done. See: http://marriage.about.com/cs/marriagelicenses/p/colorado.htm
Because it is so ridiculously easy once you have the license, we were careful to not even joke about it so we’d be married in church :)
.......didn’t Al Gore invent the internet......it’s HIS fault.
