GOP aims to force immigration debate
The Washington Times ^ | March 11, 2008 | Stephen Dinan

Posted on 03/11/2008 6:35:16 AM PDT by Delacon

House Republican leaders will introduce a petition drive today to force Democrats to debate immigration this year, using a Democrat-sponsored bill to box them into taking a stand on employers who hire illegal immigrants.

Republican leaders reached the decision yesterday evening to initiate a "discharge petition," a parliamentary move minority parties can use to force issues onto the House floor over objections of the majority. The last successful use was on campaign finance in 2002.

But Republicans' move also puts Sen. John McCain, their party's presumed presidential nominee, in a tough spot. He has consistently opposed enhanced security efforts that weren't also tied to granting citizenship rights to illegal immigrants, and the effort could highlight a deep rift among Republicans.

Republicans are using a bill sponsored by a conservative Democrat, Rep. Heath Shuler of North Carolina, to try to force the issue. The bill would boost the number of U.S. Border Patrol agents and require businesses to check employees' Social Security numbers against a federal database, known as E-Verify. The system is currently voluntary.

"The Shuler discharge petition will be filed tomorrow," a House Republican leadership aide said after the leaders met yesterday. Another aide said the petition will be sponsored by an unspecified Republican in a swing district, to provide a November boost.

Republicans must collect 218 signatures, or a majority of House members, to force the bill onto the floor over the objection of Democratic leaders.

Mr. McCain said he "gets it" that voters want security enhanced before they will accept his plan for a legalization program that would grant citizenship rights to millions of illegal immigrants.

So, we needed to LOSE Denny Hastert’s seat to finally do something about this?

I'm glad he's gone, then.

That's funny, I didn't realize I ever intended to accept the legalizations of millions already here.

And note the weasel word following the pre-condition of (border) security: “enhanced”.

That could mean color photos suitable for framing from
the “virtual fence” as they wave goodbye heading north,
like cameras at the end of a water ride at Six Flags.

John McCain's latest statements on Illegals

Flip, flop.

Ordinarily, I think it'd be a great idea to force the Dem's hands on immigration, since we're not only on the right side but on the winning side.

Unfortunately, we'll also be highlighting that our candidate is on the wrong side as well.

The problem is the reverse...nobody who came here legally will have any precedence in getting his application processed over those that came illegally. There are not enough workers in the system to process the current workload in a timely manner...nevermind adding millions more applications to the backlog.

Is why I posted this article. The petition to have a floor vote is being done, among other things, to force McCain to move to the right on immigration. The article doesn’t make clear that this is a petition to have a floor vote on the SAVE Act that is primarily an enforcement bill. It was authored by a dem, has many blue dog democrats as co sponsors, and even more republican co sponsors. If is goes to the floor and McCain says he opposes it, he is opposing moderate democrats who are in favor of it. If he does that he is going to look bad to middle of the road democrat and republican voters which he will need in the general election.

See, if you are pro amnesty you can still be pro border security. Amnesty for all the illegals here but just don’t let anymore in. This is the position McCain has staked out. Talk up border security but make no committments to enforcement which has the goal of making illegals not want to be here by making everything they try to do here illegal and actually really enforce it. Why waste time enforcing laws that will become null and void once you legalize all the illegals? This position wont work though. Motivate immigrants to come here illegally who can easily find jobs and a government infrastucture willing to help them and think they will eventually get amnesty yet again and no fence will be good enough keep them out. At least not a fence that Americans are willing to pay for year in year out, decade after decade.

"seems like you might be the DUMB ASS?"

I'd say the dumbass is someone who thinks we should overlook his continuing amnesty plans. We should overlook his plans to close Gitmo. We should overlook his desires to give the enemy combatants there lawyers in our civil courts. We should overlook his anti-waterboarding stupidity. We should overlook his previous dismantling of our free speech rights. We should overlook that he buys into the global warming fraud, We should overlook his RINO history of obstructionism.

We should overlook everything else that's wrong about him, because "HE'S GOOD FOR THE TROOPS".

How is all this stuff that's bad for the country any good for our troops?

How many of them (and us) will die because RINO McCain won't allow waterboarding? That's not how you win wars.

He needs to do some serious recanting if he expects to be elected. Too many folks have a problem voting for a liberal democRAT on our own ticket!

"These are god’s children and we are going to handle it in a humane fashion but with the principal that no one who came her illegally would have any precedence over someone who either came legally or waited legally for a chance to become a citizen of this country.

Sure that means he still plans to give amnesty to those her illegally, and allow them to stay here and work ahead of those who didn't break the law, while those waiting are still outside the country not working. He used the words for a chance to become a CITIZEN of this country, not immigrant or guest worker. The illegals still get to cut in line in front of those outside the country. Its political doublespeak and he needs to be called on it.

Republican primary voters can't just wash their hands of him and pretend they don't have any responsibility.

Excellent summation of the problems with McCain and you are spot on. You are a precious logical thinker among us. As for myself, because of his history, I can't trust McCain even if he does recant his position on amnesty and will either do write in, work for true conservatives in both houses, or not vote.

There is a reason that former POWs will not sit down at the same table with him. Step back and take into consideration what he has done to conservatives and the Constitution and you people may realize why the reluctance of conservatives to support him. Because of what he has done in the Senate, I will definitely not vote for him which would constitute my sitting down at the same table with him.

Have at it .... I'm off to some shopping while I can still afford the diesel fuel.

Do what’s right Republicans and America will come back to you. This election is very important but the financial pain of America is coming like a tsunami from all directions. Illegal aliens have been draining the system for decades.

First, enforce the law, the jobs will dry up and most Mexicans will go home. Fine businesses that hire them thousands of dollars per incident and make plenty of examples.

Then, register illegals over a span of a year to become citizens. It is THEIR responsibility to show up for processing, not the States or local communities. Make several federal announcements and when the cuttoff comes, it comes and is done.

Over a three year span they must learn English (on their own dime so they can take the nationalization test without a spanish intepretor) and not commit a Felony of any sort or Class A Misdameanors (or you get deported immediately). After this phase, issue SS cards and offer job training, but no welfare freebies. These will become tax-paying, responsible voters that understand our rule of law and must rely on the benevolence of our population like so many immigrants had to in the past.

The last leg of the journey is to declare war on the gangs, the dregs that refused to register. They will be very easy to spot.

Forget the fence, it’s a waste of money. Use the National Guard along the border and Hueys, radar and sonar to detect violators. When violators are captured, transport them to the very bottom of Mexico like Ike did in the 1950’s. This is FAR cheaper then incarcerating them or just dumping them back on the border where they will simply try again. Attempts to cross the border cost money. After the first failed attempt they will be broke and have to spend whatever remaining dollars getting from Southern Mexico back to their families. As a side benefit, the Guard will also get some very valuable training in the process.

You had best serve the nation properly to get through these problems and start showing some balls, this move is a good start.

The majority does not want illegal invasion, stop listening to the left wing media ilk. The financial pain will begin to put an end to the PC crap going on in America as the Middle Class has awakened to the fact that we are now Lower Class citizens. Responsible American Patriots that love this country are now openly discussing if we need to overrun Washington if this kind of corrupt, oligarchy-AmeriKa style government continues to behave in such fashion for too much longer.

However, We the People will support the party and attempt the democratic process as plan A. A revolution is a nasty, distasteful affair but to any true American it is always plan B.

Patriotic, educated American’s have begun feeling we have no real leadership left, only crooks on both sides putting our entire American way of life in mortal peril. Reconnect with the people, do lots of public broadcasting that you’re the American party first and not disconnected from the masses, having tea parties and vacations. This may not be true but many people THINK it is and you had best use you’re leverage to demonstrate otherwise or we will have Dem’s in power driving the nation into the ground until plan B occurs or our enemies do the job.

McCain and his fellow RINOs just plain do not get it and do not want to get it. They are determined to force it down our throats! And McCain still has Dr. Juan Hernandez, the notorious radical open borders advocate on his advisory staff. If any of the three leading candidates get into the White House, they will push amnesty on us and illegals won’t have to go to the end of the line and wait their turn to immigrate LEGALLY like everyone else.

This is actually pretty good. For McCain people on the board it would be helpful to push John to promote a crash water desalination & transport policy to dovetail with his promise to take the USA off dependency on foreign oil within 5 years.

If water desalination and tranport were 1/10th current costs you would be in a position to turn the deserts of Mexico green and triple the habitable size of that country. The same technology would increase the habitable size of the USA by 1/3.

Research in this field already promises to deliver.

Federal research guidlines are already enabling more research dollars to go toward desalination research.

Here is a discussion of proposals for targeting further federal dollars at desalination research in the context of McCain's discussion of the need for energy independence.

This is really dishonest.

Just ASSUMING, lock/stock/barrel without any discussion, that we all want the fence BEFORE WE LEGALIZE ALL THE ILLEGALS.

What sense does THAT make?

It means:

OUTRIGHT AMNESTY

and

It means, once they are legalized, they will petition another 20 million or more of their RELATIVES to come into the United States.

JOHN MCCAIN, YOU BIG DUMBASS, here are your orders from your bosses, the American People. They are simple. They are only two.

1. FENCE/WALL/IMPENETRABLE BORDER FIRST AND FOREMOST, LIKE YESTERDAY

and

2. NO AMNESTY AT ALL. FENCE OR NO FENCE. DEPORTATIONS THROUGH GOVERNMENT ACTION AND ATTRITION/SELF-DEPORTATION OF THE 20 MILLION OR SO HERE
