One of the excuses that I recall being made for Bill Clinton is that spreading your oats around was a normal character trait of high achieving men.

Anyone who can trace their ancestry back to 15th centruy England, for instance, most likely has William the Conqueror somewhere in their family tree. Even multiple times. The guy fathered a great number of kids.

I wouldn't doubt that enough research would find him in Slick Willie's family tree and he could blame his genes.

OTOH, William the Conqueror is in my family tree at least nine times and I don't blame my genes. I also manage to keep my jeans zipped except for Mrs. Vigilanteman.

I can state, from first hand experience, that many times the wife/husband HAS NO IDEA that their spouse is having an affair/visiting prostitutes/playing for the other team, nor did they fail at fulfilling the cheaters’ sexual/psychological needs. Egotists - male or female - like Spitzer don’t need permission, nor do they seek it. They like to dance on the hopes and aspirations of others, and they don’t make any exceptions for their spouses or families. It dances on the edge of pyschosis to blame every duped wife/husband for “enabling” their cheating partner to go out and commit adultery.

I’m amazed at the number of people who immediately turn to condemn Mrs. Spitzer as “having known” about any of this, or perhaps had it coming because she was “not enough” somehow. I guess I expect more out of you folks, but then, I’m just naive I guess...

But then I imagine some would say that, in expecting more out of you, I enabled you to say those things.

(I suppose that would explain my first-marriage experience with this subject.)

I have a question:

Is Spitzer a Democrat or a Republican?

In every story I see about this scandal, it doesn't identify his party affiliation. I can't help but think that if he is a Republican, no newspaper would resist the urge to be sure to let you know. Since they aren't saying what his party affiliation is, I'm assuming he's a Democrat. - But I could be wrong. I really don't know and never heard of him before.
