We never hesitated to take our sons to an orthodontist to improve their appearance. Our older son in particular has a greatly improved profile thanks to correction of a significant overbite. If either of them had a correctible feature or deformity which would cause them undue social difficulties, I think we'd consider surgery, provided they had the capacity to understand and not be too frightened by it. There are plenty of ways for them to be unique and interesting individuals without needlessly hurting their social and professional prospects. We live in an appearance-conscious culture, for better or worse.
