After 30 years, Navratilova's Czech again

Tue Mar 11, 3:12 AM ET

Tennis legend Martina Navratilova said Tuesday she has regained Czech nationality more than 30 years after fleeing communism in the country of her birth to live in the United States.

"I lost it at the time I defected. I got it back on January 9," Navratilova told a news conference on a visit to Tokyo.

The 51-year-old former world champion said she was maintaining dual nationality and keeping her US passport.

Born in Prague, Navratilova fled to the United States in 1975 at the height of the Cold War, angering communist authorities who stripped her of her nationality. She became a US citizen six years later.

But Navratilova said last year that while she was once ashamed about Czechoslovakia, she was now ashamed of the United States under President George W. Bush.

"The thing is that we elected Bush. That is worse! Against that, nobody chose a communist government in Czechoslovakia," she told the Czech daily Lidove Noviny.

Czechoslovakia split in 1993 after the fall of communism into the Czech Republic and Slovakia.

Navratilova has said that she left home because authorities refused to let her play tennis in the United States, where the vast majority of tournaments were then held.

"She could play tennis tho"

The days of running and jumping have passed. They are no longer values but distractions. You have to think these days.

Well I used to be proud of her as a fellow Czech (for her on-court accomplishments) but now that has to be outweighed by my shame at her ingratitude and BDS. Martino, laskave bez do prdele! It is one thing to have a political opinion, another thing entirely to run down the country that gave you shelter when your own homeland became intolerable. Oh and by the way her history is also faulty - the communists were elected into power in Czechoslovakia (in ~1947, and of course that was the last real election until 1989).

If it wasn’t for the USA in WWII the Czech Republic might still be flying the Nazi swastika flag.

More of the usual, all over again, much too often.

Shut up and sing. Shut up and act. Shut up and play tennis.

Just shut up.

Looks like the Czech bounced. At least when she did not like it here, she left.

Here we go again with a “dual citizenship”. I do not agree and have yet to have ANYONE offer me a SINGLE good reason to allow such dual citizenship.

Make a choice. You are either an AMERICAN, or you are something else. Period.

How is it any sort of fair (or legal) to carry a US Citizen’s passport, while being a Czech citizen (or any other citizen)?

She’s an ex-celebrity trying to find a tax haven.... and get some desperately needed free publicity to jumpstart her income inside the Czech Republic.

Czech Republic Income Taxes and Tax Laws

eTaxJobs - the World’s largest tax jobs portal

Last partial update, January 2008

The czech income tax rate for individual’s income in 2008 is flat, a 15% rate. In 2007 tax on the income of individuals was payable at rates of 12% - 32%.
Corporate tax in 2008 is 21%. There is a reduced tax rate for certain income. The rate of corporation tax is reduced constantly to encourage economic activity, so that for instance, the rate of corporation tax in 1992 was 45% as compared to the present rate of 21%.

Taxation of Individuals
An individual pays tax on his income as a wage earner or as a self-employed person. Tax for an individual who meets the criteria of a “permanent resident” of the Czech Republic is calculated on his income earned inside the Republic and abroad. A foreign resident who is employed in the Czech Republic pays tax only on income earned in the Republic.

Ahhhhh yes.

Keep your options open and flee to whichever country whose soldiers are currently dying for your freedom.

I agree. This dual citizen crap is bullshit. Why the hell do we, the United States of America, allow this nonsense?

I remember reading where the parents of the younger players had to keep a close eye on their daughters to prevent Navratilova and some other from “recruiting” them.
