Future of coal power under fire
Stateline.org ^ | March 08, 2008 | Eric Kelderman

Coal-producing states that supply nearly half of the nation’s electricity are feeling squeezed as efforts to combat global warming outpace technology needed to make the nation’s most abundant fossil fuel burn more cleanly.

In 2007, proposals for 59 coal plants were scrapped in 24 states, either by state regulators concerned about the effects of carbon-dioxide emissions or by power companies worried about the future costs of pollution, according to data from the Sierra Club.

Now, governors and other officials from major mining states are intensifying calls to expand technologies to reduce carbon-dioxide emissions from coal power ...

~~snip~~

Coal is now burned in more than 600 plants to generate 49 percent of the country’s current electricity, ...

Although 150 new coal-fired power plants were proposed between 2000 and 2006, the bulk of those projects has been delayed or canceled ... More than 36,000 megawatts of electricity was scheduled to come from new coal-fired power in 2007 — enough to power roughly 36 million homes, just 4,500 megawatts was actually produced, ...

Coal is under fire for the amount of carbon dioxide the plants emit — the most prevalent greenhouse gas and widely accepted as a primary cause of global warming. Electric power generation from coal accounts for roughly 34 percent of U.S. greenhouse-gas emissions.

State governments already are leading the movement to curb greenhouse gases, with 26 now requiring that a percentage of electricity come from renewable sources, such as wind and solar. ...

Utility companies also have pulled the plug on many of their own plans because of public backlash and the potential costs of carbon dioxide regulations ...

... international financial institutions Citigroup Inc., JPMorgan Chase, Morgan Stanley and Bank of America announced they would begin weighing the economic and environmental risks of underwriting electric-power projects...

Excellent article and source of information and data on how the coal industry, generating half of this country's electricity, is under fire by first environmentalists then state agencies and now financial lending institutions to prevent construction of new plants. We are facing an electrical energy crisis on top of the oil crisis driving gasoline and heating oil costs through the roof.

The environazis and their cronies in government and the media are determined to drive this society back to a pre-industrial age and take away our freedoms to boot.

The concept of carbon dioxide as a pollutant is so preposterous that it has to be a conspiracy.

So why aren’t we expiditing more nukes???

Could it be because reducing our use of electric power will serve the interests of those who want us brought down to better merge us into their vaunted NEW WORLD ORDER?

Anyone care to educate mr ekelderman@stateline.org that his statement: carbon dioxide the plants emit — the most prevalent greenhouse gas

Is patently false? Water Vapor is the most prevalent greenhouse gas, 95% of all greenhouse effect is from Water Vapor. Carbon Dioxide is a trace gas. Human contribution to Carbon dioxide is a few percentage points to this trace gas.

Will we ever get to a place in our nation where we uniformly reject the environmental extremists? I just don’t know.

"The environazis and their cronies in government and the media are determined to drive this society back to a pre-industrial age and take away our freedoms to boot.

Why bother with the WOT? Why concern ourselves with Islamofacism? No need to worry about Red China or Russia!

Long before we are threatened by any of these, we will have ceased to be a viable society and will have so retreated to pre-discovery, that no one will even be interested in subjugating us.

IF there be a force or group MORE dangerous to our very existence than Islamofacist, its the ENVIRONUTS, and I am deadly serious.

We could be mounting a concentrated defense--IF we only had someone in the White House who was willing to do so--as opposed to having capitulated and gone over to the dark side.

As an aside, thank to Bill Clinton, we no longer have access to the largest deposit of clean burning coal IN THE WORLD.

Makes sense to me.

BEAM ME UP SCOTTY!!

Coal gassification?

I had to cut some of the article to fit within 300 words excerpt limit. Here is part of what it said on that technology:

Now, governors and other officials from major mining states are intensifying calls to expand technologies to reduce carbon-dioxide emissions from coal power, including a method that turns carbon dioxide into a synthetic natural gas, called gasification, or to store the emissions underground, through a process called sequestration.

...

Seventeen states already provide financial incentives to encourage cleaner coal-burning technology. North Dakota has the only plant that gasifies coal and pumps the synthetic natural gas to pipelines that supply the eastern United States — and also captures some of the carbon-dioxide emissions.

The first line of this article is patently ridiculous:

“Coal-producing states that supply nearly half of the nation’s electricity are feeling squeezed as efforts to combat global warming outpace technology needed to make the nation’s most abundant fossil fuel burn more cleanly.”

You can’t burn coal without producing CO2. It is how you convert the chemical energy in the coal into heat, so you can do other things (like make steam to drive a turbine to drive a generator to make electricity).

The Global Warming Alarmists are claiming the CO2 is causing Global Warming. You can’t make it “clean burning” in such a way as to satisfy the Global Warming crowd.

Liberals/democrats/socialists have stopped most coal power plants from being built. If they had allowed these plants to be built then electricity, heating oil (Oil) and energy would be cheaper which would in turn make everything less expensive.

So Democrats are causing us to pay $4 for a gallon of gas.

There is no global warming . That is hoax. from 2007 to 2008 the earth cooled almost 1 degree Celsius. Notice the cold winter.

Even if there were global warming Coal and carbon dioxide don't cause global warming but the Sun does.

Liberals just want to make everything more expensive and destroy capitalism or cripple capitalism so much that they can then say “See how expensive capitalism makes things so now we need to nationalize everything”. Then the massive starvation of the populations begin.

The U.S. has 600 years of cheap coal. But democrats won't let companies use the coal or drill for oil. And then democrats blame the oil companies for what Demorats caused, an energy crises.
