Durham, N.C. — Heavily armed Durham police, surrounding a house before dawn Thursday, captured the second of two men charged with murder in the shooting of the student body president at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Lawrence Alvin Lovette Jr., 17, surrendered to officers from the department's Selective Enforcement Team outside a house on Cook Road at 4:16 a.m. Police had surrounded the house hours before after receiving an anonymous tip through the Durham County Sheriff's Office

We can hope....but they just keep producing thugs like this - it’s an endless cycle - not just in Durham —— but so MANY are in Durham.
So we might ask why does Durham seem to have a crime culture?
Due to a TOLERANCE of crime / criminals there, IMHO....in the community, in the police force, in the prosecutor’s office (Nifong ran it remember), in the courts there, in the mayor’s office there.
Yes there is a death penalty on the books - however it is INACTIVE because the NC Medical Society refuses to meet the state’s requirement to be forced to have a doctor at the executions.
No doctor. No executions.
Am not sure what that will mean here - if the death penalty can still be found by a jury/judge or not.
Maybe legal eagles from NC can report in on this topic.
how far did they drive from Durham to rob and murder this girl? Do we know yet how it happened? Just guessing but seems maybe she went out to a convenience store and was carjacked
I Texas, it would be a no-brainer.
Glad they got him - best we can hope for is that they either rot in prison, or get taken out by the other prisoners.

I am cautiously optimistic that they will have good cases against these two pieces of vermin and that the investigation wasn’t botched up beyond repair.
Life in prison with no chance of parole or death penalty if available.
I agree with you, but you don’t know Chapel Hill too well. Before it is over there will be crying FOR these killers. Hate to say I went to UNC undergrad and grad...

Ever notice when thugs are caught they pose for their mug shots with a very defiant look. It looks as if they are proud of what they did, and that they know, in their culture, they are now heros.

I don’t think that I would last 5 minutes as a Cop. I sure wouldn’t tell them to duck when they get in the back seat of the Black and white.

Durham is only 20 mins from Chapel Hill.

Same here. Atwater did have a bruise, contusion, on his right cheek that showed up in his pictures of his arrest.

But seems like the police were, um, forceful in his arrest.
