FEDS MAKING THEIR CASE AGAINST ELIOT (Client 9)
NY POst ^ | 3/13/08 | KATI CORNELL, LARRY CELONA and DAN MANGAN

Federal investigators will pore over Gov. Spitzer's financial records - dating to his earliest days as New York's attorney general - before they decide whether, or how, to prosecute him, a law-enforcement source told The Post yesterday.

The feds' desire to thoroughly examine Spitzer's bank, credit-card and other records dating as far back as 1999 is a key reason prosecutors are not rushing to cut a plea deal with him.

That inquiry could take months, the source said.

Sources said Spitzer's wife, Silda, urged him not to quit, to keep the issue of resignation as a bargaining chip.

Go to jail. Go directly to jail. Do not pass Go. Do not collect $200.

Lawyers (wife) always think everything is negotiable. Spitzer had ZERO to offer the FEDS in reality.

"...it's against very, very firm government policy, especially when dealing with a high elected official," for prosecutors to make such a deal.

Clinton did it.

Although there is nothing more I would like as for this guy to get auctioned to the man with the most packs of cigarettes once he's in the big house, I'm not so sure I like the idea of our judicial system using up a lot of resources to drag him through court. Spitzer is going to spend as much of his dad's money as he can to avoid jail time. Our justice department is going to spend as much of our money as they can to put him in jail. If Hillary becomes President, he will most likely get pardoned.

I don’t think it’s going to be very hard to put him in jail, frankly; even the little that is known now makes it clear that he was fully aware of what he was doing and knew that it was illegal.

In addition, I bet one of the things they will be looking for now is whether he used any state money or resources in his frolics, and I’m sure they’ll find that he did. I recall reading when the case broke that they were looking at flights he made to Florida on the taxpayer’s dime for the purpose of visiting a prostitute, for example.

He’s corrupt, and that cannot and should not be tolerated.

New York State Attorney General Andrew Cuomo may also have a case against Eliot Spitzer.

Let the State of New York throw him in jail. It’s their money he played with.

I wouldn't be surprised if Spitzer left the country prior to indictment. He would not have resigned had there not been a “smoking gun”. His political career is over, and he may have nothing but an expensive trial and jail time ahead. The “steamroller” simply made too many enemies while in office.

What I want to know is did he get a discount because they knew he was the attorney general and later the governor? If so, I think that proves that they were paying him to look the other way.

So he should get away with knowingly committing felonies because he’ll be expensive to prosecute and Hillary might pardon him? The Justice Department should stick to prosecuting the peons?

"Let the State of New York throw him in jail. It’s their money he played with."

The state of NY might prosecute him for breaking state laws, but the feds are what we use in this country to prosecute federal offenses.

“I’m not so sure I like the idea of our judicial system using up a lot of resources to drag him through court. “

Having him answer for his crimes is no less important than making sure Nifong was put on trial.

Nifong got off easy compared to the damage he inflicted on people and on our justice system. I don’t think Spitzer will get off so easy.

"Lawyers (wife) always think everything is negotiable. Spitzer had ZERO to offer the FEDS in reality."

I think Spitzer can give up the x42's ... and I think the x42's are quivering a little ... Spitzer was not in the world of 800 FBI files .....

“I'm not so sure I like the idea of our judicial system using up a lot of resources to drag him through court.”

Just what the he77 do you think our judicial system is for? THAT is what they do, try those accused of breaking the law that our representatives make for us.

THIS is the guy that our Founding Fathers warned us about, that seek power for personal gain, that believe they are above the very laws they pass because of their powerful positions, and who use those positions to oppress those they are supposed to be serving.

I hope this guy gets dragged through every court possible for every single law he broke. And I hope this guy does jail time. No one else would be able to use resigning their position to get out jail. Being governor does NOT put anyone above the law.

If the judiciary would stop legislating, they'd have a lot more time to try cases and determine the guilt or innocence of those accused of breaking the ‘real’ law.

I think all this media stuff I am seeing today (the Alan Dershowitz article, various newspaper articles and editorials) is actually an orchestrated campaign to keep him from having to resign on Monday (the effective date). He is too arrogant to do anything like leave quietly; he really thinks he is special and has the right to do whatever he wants.

I’ve seen several arguments designed to appeal to the libertarian crowd (it’s just sex, what’s the government doing looking at your bank transactions, etc.) and others designed to appeal to the paranoid leftist crowd (Bush is using the banks to go after his enemies). Libertarians who want to campaign for the legalization of prostitution can go ahead and do that; loony leftists who think the bank reporting laws are evil can also go ahead and campaign against them. But the fact remains that as the law is now, Spitzer broke it flamboyantly and knowingly, and is relying on his office to get him out of trouble.

This media onslaught is to attempt to build public support and enable the Dems not to vote to impeach him, should he refuse to resign on Monday.
