NEW HAVEN, Connecticut (AP) -- School officials have decided to go light on an eighth-grader caught with contraband candy in New Haven, Connecticut. art.skittles.suspension.wfsb.jpg

Michael Sheridan originally was suspended and loss his class vice president post after buying a bag of candy.

Michael Sheridan, an eighth-grade honors student who was suspended for a day, barred from attending an honors dinner and stripped of his title as class vice president after he was caught with a bag of Skittles candy in school will get his student council post back, school officials said.

Superintendent Reginald Mayo said in a statement late Wednesday that he and principal Eleanor Turner met with student Michael's parents and that Turner decided to clear the boy's record and restore him to his student council post.

Michael was disciplined after he was caught buying a bag of Skittles from a classmate. The classmate's suspension also will be expunged, school officials said. Video Watch boy explain case »

The New Haven school system banned candy sales in 2003 as part of a districtwide school wellness policy, school spokeswoman Catherine Sullivan-DeCarlo said.

"I am sorry this has happened," Turner said in a statement. "My hope is that we can get back to the normal school routine, especially since we are in the middle of taking the Connecticut mastery test." advertisement

Turner said she should have reinforced in writing the verbal warnings against candy transactions.

Michael had said that he didn't realize his candy purchase was against the rules, but he did notice that the student selling the Skittles on February 26 was being secretive

I am surprised they didn’t summarily execute the kid! After all, they have to clamp down on those over-achievers. They hurt the self-esteem of the goof-offs!

He ought to realize that school is really a prison. Same kind of environment, same kind of rules.

I wonder if they’re going to go after the pushers, going after the suppliers of big candy now.

1) Wellness. Watch for that word, folks. It's a sure sign of PC run amok. Normal people would say "health". When somebody says "wellness" they are most likely a nanny-state fascist.

2) Does anybody else here wonder at the fact that we have spokesholes for a local school district now? They probably have a superintendent making between 500k and a mil, and he's not competent to talk to the media?

I wonder, if you bring your OWN lunch, and have some candy as a part of it, are you still liable for suspension? THAT would anger me greatly..........

I can't believe they let this kid off. Skittles is just an entry level candy. By the time this kid is 20 he'll be free basing Ju Ju Beans.

And what has the educational system come to when they give up on the 24/7 monitoring of every child's caloric intake?

I wouldn't be surprised if there are kids popping TicTacs in the boys restroom!

Skittles is a well-known gateway candy. Next thing you know, they're stuffing their faces with Snickers and maybe even something truly insidious like a 100 Grand bar.

So when are the schools going to be given search warrant power to make sure the little kiddies' homes aren't stocked with Cap'n Crunch and Cocoa Krispies? I'm so glad that there is a "wellness policy" to dictate what's good for kids. God forbid the parents actually decide that.

I wonder if Michael Sheridan's reversal of fortune at the Sheridan Middle School had anything to do with ... oh, I don't know ... say, his last name. Just curious.

(I also noticed that the school's name wasn't mentioned at all in this piece, which seems odd. It was, however, mentioned in yesterday's news story and that did not escape my attention!)

Banning skittles is crazy talk. Isn't mental health an important aspect of "wellness" Threatening to ruin a young leaders school record over a bag of candy can't be part of any "wellness" program either.

I just can not stand the state of lunacy the world seems to be trapped in these days. I can't imagine how much worse it will be if the dems win the election. Strange days.
