CA: Student disciplined after stopping out-of-control school bus (was supposed to be in class)

A 15-year-old girl who stopped her out-of-control school bus was hit with a Saturday detention because she was supposed to be in class when the accident happened.

Marina High School student Amanda Rouse was on a bus with 40 elementary school students Wednesday morning when the driver fell out of her seat after a turn and hit her head.

Rouse jumped up and applied the brakes, bringing the bus to a halt after striking two parked cars. No one was injured.

But Rouse said she was punished because she wasn't supposed to be on the bus in the first place.

Rouse said she fell ill on the way to school, but instead of calling in sick, she asked the bus driver for a lift back to the bus yard before the accident happened. She must attend Saturday school as punishment for failing to call in sick that day.

"She is in trouble with school because she made the wrong decision," said Rouse's grandmother, Sally Correll. "But I can't help but believe that she was where God wanted her to be."

A spokesperson for the Monterey Peninsula Unified School District could not immediately be reached Saturday.

A sick girl needed to go to the bus yard? Uh-huh.

I think this is fair. Give her a certificate and a resolution of thanks for stopping the bus, and give her detention for skipping school.

School administrators are weak and cowardly.

They pass off inflexiblity as judgement because they are too scared to make decisions. I see this crap at my kids schools.

I guess that means if you stop a school yard killing spree with your weapon...you will go to prison. Figures.

Doesn’t she know that her missed attendance causes ADA revenue to decrease and thereby reduce the size of the public pension trough? How COMPLETELY inconsiderate of her!

I guess to them it is better to have crashed and burned than to have stepped forward in a time of need.

How fast was this driver of a bus full of elementary school children driving? If the turn could throw the driver out of her seat, while she had the benefit of a steering wheel to hold onto, what about the kids???

I know the kids don’t have seat belts but I thought the bus driver had to wear one..

Apparently, some people don't subscribe to things happening for a reason. I was working at my theater last night and told a lady she had to take her camera to her car. She wasn't happy about it, but came back grateful saying she had just found out her car lights were on and if she hadn't gone back to her car...

If this girl had not felt sick and decided to go back (because the driver could probably have just made her get off the bus if it was so important) things may have been much worse for everyone on board.

As we’ve both said in prior threads, no one could make up what goes on in the public schools.

If I were here I would go tell the school administrators where to stick it and announce I would no longer be attending their school.

That is exactly why she was punished...the 40 bucks the school didnt receive that day ruined some liberal’s day

I agree. Praise and reward her for her quick thinking and quick action. But she was skipping school...so having to make it up on Saturday seems fair to me. If I were supervising that Saturday group, though, I would bring donuts for all in honor of the girl whose quick actions kept kids safe.

Rouse said she fell ill on the way to school, but instead of calling in sick, she asked the bus driver for a lift back to the bus yard before the accident happened.

So basically what I'm reading here is, the girl was on the bus, asked the driver to return her to the bus yard but before the driver even did anything she got knocked out silly. Then the girl stopped the bus and the driver ratted her out for saying she wanted to go back?
