Microsoft today praised a bill introduced in the U.S. Congress that would double the number of immigrant worker visas available each year under the H-1B program.
The Innovation Employment Act, introduced by Representative Gabrielle Giffords, an Arizona Democrat, late Thursday, would increase the cap in H-1B visas from 65,000 a year to 130,000 a year. In addition, there would be no cap on H-1B applications for foreign graduate students attending U.S. colleges and studying science, technology and related fields. Currently, there's a 20,000-a-year cap on visas for graduate students in all fields.
The legislation would increase the H-1B cap to 180,000 in 2010 to 2015 if the 130,000 cap is reached the year before.

It’s long past time that our bought and paid for representatives in DC stopped swallowing whole whatever Gates and other executives tell them. How difficult would it be to establish a national data base where Computer Science and other majors supposedly in short supply could simply enter a resume, or some basic data re: education and experience. There should be a way to collect data to compare to what Congress is being told by business execs.
I expect most here recall the youtube from last year showing a meeting of headhunters, where it was stated that they did not want to find a qualified American for a job, but they wanted to falsely justify and qualify another H-1B entry into the US.
As with all immigration activities of our gov’t, there needs to be serious and independent oversight of what’s being done, and especially what’s being swallowed whole by our elected representatives, after being served up by some of their biggest campaign contributors.

You understand incorrectly. You aren't supposed to pay H1Bs less than the prevailing rate but they find ways around that easily enough.
