In a move that will allow movie studios to inject racy jokes into the trailers they use to promote their more adult-oriented films, the nation's largest theater chain has decided to permit restricted, "red band" trailers in its multiplexes.
The move by Regal Entertainment Group, which operates 6,388 screens in 39 states and the District of Columbia, likely will lead to similar decisions at a number of the nation's other major chains.
As last week's ShoWest convention of movie theater owners in Las Vegas drew to a close, the Knoxville, Tenn.-based circuit began notifying the studios of its decision.
The news was received enthusiastically by distributors who have had to promote such R-rated comedies as "Knocked Up" and "Superbad" with sanitized, green band trailers tailored for general audiences.
"This is going to be hugely helpful for us when we want to give targeted moviegoers a true sense of the kind of movies we are offering," said Adam Fogelson, Universal president of marketing and distribution. "I couldn't be happier or more grateful to the people at Regal for continuing the dialogue that has led to this decision."
Just look at how badly 'Semi-Pro' is doing. I saw the movie but right from the beginning it was so disgusting and so not funny that had to walk out.
I like movies and enjoy watching them with the family. However, if they are going to force these trailers even in Rated-G movies then I have to believe they would lose audience.
Do these losers really think that 'Knocked Up' and 'Superbad' would have made LOTS more money had they advertised them as 'raunchy' and 'kinky'? I think the effect is opposite. If they cleaned them up, lots more people would find those movies interesting.
I mean did they even do any research to determine it would help their cause?
I see nothing wrong with having “R” rated trailers only at “R” rated movies.
Assuming that’s how they keep it....
WOW! I just realized the last time I was in a movie theater was almost 20yrs ago when I too my daughter to see “Roger Rabbit”. I don’t think I missed anything.. did I?
You keep bending over to the Machine, and want sympathy? Yeah, right.
Only until you and your kind finally starves them to a molecule of their lives will you effect change.
Raunchy Trailers starring Jaime Pressley and Luke Wilson.
As a parent of adults, but with grandchildren, I would hope the trailers were geared to the audience and the rating of the movie, the trailer proceeds. Isn’t that common sense and good business?
Go figure, I always thought they were.
a couple action movies and beavis and butthead do America
Just in the past week, they have had featured articles on Hitting the G Spot and Threesomes on their home page.
Yes, the words "G Spot" and "Threesome" were actually used on Foxnews.com main page. I'm certainly no prude, but sheesh, gimme a break !!
The funny thing is that “Knocked Up” was really a chick flick for guys. Most of these raunchy movies are romantic comedies aimed at men — with a some TnA to draw in the teen and 20-something male audience.
Good question! More and more it seems we've gone from "The customer is always right" to "If you don't like it that's not my problem. Go some where else." IOW, the consumer is no loner king, he's more of an afterthought.
The MPAA requires that red band trailers only be shown before R-rated movies. Many theaters do not use such trailers at all because of the risk that they might accidentally get spliced in front of the wrong films. While it would be easy for a person splicing in trailers to hold the start up to the light to make sure it's green, that wouldn't prevent a person from accidentally splicing in a red-band trailer that had been spliced onto the end of a green-band trailer for exhibition in an R-rated film.
Maybe movie theaters should require that a couple frames of white and silver leader always be spliced in at the beginning and end of each red-band trailer. Adding a couple of blank frames on playback shouldn't affect the audience experience, but those spliced-in frames would be visible sitting on the platter. I wonder if anyone does anything like that?
For anyone who thinks R-rated trailers will only be shown at R-rated movies: I've got some swamp land in Arizona to sell you.
From my understanding, the MPAA has been very strict about that. Indeed, the reason few theaters show the red-band trailers is because they don't want to risk MPAA sanctions if a red-band trailer gets spliced in before a non-R film.
I usually wait until a movie comes out on DVD before I watch it. I can buy the DVD, a box of microwave popcorn, and a 2-liter of Coke for less than what it would cost to go to the theater.
At home you don't have to worry about sitting next to a guy who looks like a walk-on from The Night of the Living Dead and you can pause the movie if you need to hit the restroom or to get a refill on your Coke and popcorn.
“I’ve got some swamp land in Arizona to sell you.”
I’ll trade you a Louisiana mountain for it. ;)
