Obama lectures us on race, gender and equality. Obama's speech text

"A More Perfect Union" Remarks of Senator Barack Obama Tuesday, March 18th, 2008 Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

10:17:53 ET

“We the people, in order to form a more perfect union.”

Two hundred and twenty one years ago, in a hall that still stands across the street, a group of men gathered and, with these simple words, launched America’s improbable experiment in democracy. Farmers and scholars; statesmen and patriots who had traveled across an ocean to escape tyranny and persecution finally made real their declaration of independence at a Philadelphia convention that lasted through the spring of 1787.

The document they produced was eventually signed but ultimately unfinished. It was stained by this nation’s original sin of slavery, a question that divided the colonies and brought the convention to a stalemate until the founders chose to allow the slave trade to continue for at least twenty more years, and to leave any final resolution to future generations.

Of course, the answer to the slavery question was already embedded within our Constitution – a Constitution that had at is very core the ideal of equal citizenship under the law; a Constitution that promised its people liberty, and justice, and a union that could be and should be perfected over time.

And yet words on a parchment would not be enough to deliver slaves from bondage, or provide men and women of every color and creed their full rights and obligations as citizens of the United States.

In fact, a similar anger exists within segments of the white community. Most working- and middle-class white Americans don’t feel that they have been particularly privileged by their race. Their experience is the immigrant experience – as far as they’re concerned, no one’s handed them anything, they’ve built it from scratch. They’ve worked hard all their lives, many times only to see their jobs shipped overseas or their pension dumped after a lifetime of labor. They are anxious about their futures, and feel their dreams slipping away; in an era of stagnant wages and global competition, opportunity comes to be seen as a zero sum game, in which your dreams come at my expense. So when they are told to bus their children to a school across town; when they hear that an African American is getting an advantage in landing a good job or a spot in a good college because of an injustice that they themselves never committed; when they’re told that their fears about crime in urban neighborhoods are somehow prejudiced, resentment builds over time.

White priviledge is a myth.

And the small business owner is frustrated at losing what he has built as the government largess grows and taxes more of his profit and puts more controls on just how he runs his business and the benefits he offers his employees. Bar owners see the State regulating that they can sell cigarettes but that the customers cannot actually smoke them there.

And now we see in state tuition being given to illegal immigrants attending our public universities while those who attend unfortunately from another of the states in our union are charged 2-3 times or more the tuition rate. All because of a new non-citizen voting demographic that both parties are courting.

Slaveowners have been dead at least 75 years so it’s irrelevant.

Your ancestor went to war to stop the South from seceding.

The North did not invade the south to stop slavery before secession when they could have had slavery been their primary motivation.

but you have a point....the end result was the preserving the Union and ending slavery

Did I know him to be an occasionally fierce critic of American domestic and foreign policy? Of course. Did I ever hear him make remarks that could be considered controversial while I sat in church? Yes.

Bingo. There must be a video.

This guy is so hate filled. You can tell by reading the speech he believes every statement his minister made. He’s very dangerous.

I didn’t hear the speech, if it has been spoken yet. I read it. It is a very good speech. That’s why I am afraid people will be taken in. The sheeple outnumber us. If they want a “leader” like BHO, they can vote him into office. Only later will they realize what they asked for.

BLAH...BLAH..BLAH more lies and distortions

And yet words on a parchment would not be enough to deliver slaves from bondage(It was the Economic system of the time- He disrespects history)

I am the son of a black man from Kenya and a white woman from Kansas(So-neither one was a slave--what are you bitching about?)

I have already condemned, in unequivocal terms, the statements of Reverend Wright that have caused such controversy. For some, nagging questions remain.(Why did we wait until you got caught?)

Given my background, my politics, and my professed values and ideals,(Accepting cash from Rezko, Accepting a "Favorable" Real Estate Deal --Randy Cunningham went to prison for THAT)

This time we want to talk about how the lines in the Emergency Room are filled with whites and blacks and Hispanics who do not have health care; who don’t have the power on their own to overcome the special interests in Washington, but who can take them on if we do it together. (Oh-So we are going to ignore the fact they are illegal, and not entitled to "Health Care"--insyead you want US--The old Racist White US Taxpayers to foot the bill)

THIS FROM A GUY WHO WILL NOT WEAR A FLAG PIN, OR SALUTE THE US FLAG.

I thought that the Obama scampaign tried to claim that was NOT during the pledge or God Bless America. That it was an “ill timed” photo that caught Obama being “different” than the others.

This man is dangerous. We must all unite behind the republican candidate regardless what you may think of his shortcomings. We hold him to his promises. But to allow this guy or his weaker sister, Hillary, to hoodwink us into electing him will result in a disaster presidency beyond anyone’s dreams.

What has Barack Hussein Obama done to denounced slavery in Sudan? Or Saudis in America who are caught owning slaves?

But the remarks that have caused this recent firestorm weren’t simply controversial. They weren’t simply a religious leader’s effort to speak out against perceived injustice. Instead, they expressed a profoundly distorted view of this country – a view that sees white racism as endemic, and that elevates what is wrong with America above all that we know is right with America; a view that sees the conflicts in the Middle East as rooted primarily in the actions of stalwart allies like Israel, instead of emanating from the perverse and hateful ideologies of radical Islam.

He's talking out of both sides of his mouth now. He has a history of supporting the Palestinians over Israel.

It is amazing how stupid Americans are about him till this point.

Or is it that the media did their job so well carrying his race wampum for him?

or both.

I have actually argued with white liberal dinner companions over the great Black Hope they were swooning for and they had no clue of this stuff.

I mentioned this months ago and now I have friends and relatives calling me to tell me I was right.

If a bigot like BH Obama can get elected to the White House, would it finally put an END to the BS that black people can’t be racist because they don’t have the power structure to do anything with that prejudice?

“His candidacy is over”
I have to respectfully disagree with you.

He may get the nomination, but his chances of winning the general are zero. General election for the presidency swings on a very narrow percentage of voters in the middle, made up of middle-class, swing voters, generally white. And after being exposed to this level of black hatred (possibly for the first time), their votes are going to McCain. It could be a blowout of Reagan/Carter proportions.

No question about him! This guy is nothing but a big time slickster trying to justify Wrights speech!

Btw, there supposedly was a debate within the Obama camp about whether or not he should be giving this speech. He chose wrongly. This dude is going to have to explain all this crap and he's not going to be ale too. He condems and then tries to justify what Wright has said.

he is a very good speaker, but if you look at the actual words, he didn’t do anything but give a campaign speech, talking alot but saying nothing
