Well, certainly you could call the Saudis conservative because they are conserving a very, very old system, going back to Muhammed himself. But what sort of system was that? A crazy, power-drunk religion, scornful of reason and free will, invented by a crazy, looting, murdering pederast, whose followers have preyed upon the civilized world ever since.
My conservatism doesn’t only go back to the American founding, although it includes it. It goes back to the best that has been thought and said in the Western world—and for that matter in the great civilizations of the East, with a particular emphasis on the Judaeo-Christian tradition, which includes such things as natural law, rationality, the Logos, and so on. Our constitution was based on that. The inalienable rights were given by God—and certainly not Allah.
To me, the sudden appearance of Mohammed on the scene was a deviation from all of that. So, yes, conservative in the sense that they are sticking to a very ancient idea, but otherwise far-out crazy, IMHO.
