Saudi 11-year-old marries 10-year-old cousin: report

An 11-year-old boy has married his 10-year-old cousin in the ultra-conservative Muslim kingdom of Saudi Arabia, a newspaper reported on Tuesday.

Mohammed al-Rashidi and his unidentified cousin will seal the marriage they contracted under the sharia laws of Islam and move in together after a ceremony to take place in the summer, Al-Shams newspaper said.

"I am ready for this marriage. It will help me study better," Mohammed, who goes to primary school in the northern province of Hail, was quoted as saying by Al-Shams.

"I invite all my classmates to do like me," the boy said, adding that he wanted to "crown a love story through marriage".

The schoolboy's father, Muraizak al-Rashidi, told the newspaper he was busy sending out invitations for a summer celebration to seal the marriage.

Dahim al-Jaber, the headmaster at Mohammed's school, said marriage at such a young age was "inappropriate" but wished the couple a happy life together.

How can an eleven year old be strong enough to beat his wife properly?

Saudi Arabia is definitely one of the world's more dysfunctional societies.

Good grief. Those poor kids.

All cultures are equal. I wonder if they had premarital sex.

Even the headmaster thinks this is dumb...only because the groom isn’t 30+ years older than the bride.

in the ultra-conservative Muslim kingdom of Saudi Arabia

Can someone explain to me why Muslim customs are "ultra-conservative," and if they are, why it seems to be the ditsie leftists who never saw a Muslim terrorist or wife-beater they didn't like?

he’s one of the lucky ones really, most arab men never find a wife, probably one reasons arab men are so angry, not enough females for everyone to have a mate.

Saudi Arabia is indeed ultra-conservative. What it is conserving is medieval Arab customs.

Conservative Americans are trying to conserve the principles of the American Revolution, the only truly radical revolution in the history of the world.

So even though both groups are “conservative,” they are utterly opposed. Liberals like to lump all conservatives together to class us in with Gorby’s opposition and the Saudi theocrats, but it isn’t so, of course.

Typically, defense of monarchy, religion and "the established order" are considered to be "conservative" traditions.

American conservatism is (largely) rooted in Classical Liberalism, with traditionalist sentiments added in here and there.

at 10-12, girls are often bigger than boys.

I’m not sure how the ROP is going to handle the boy not being able to beat “his woman”.

Maybe an adult male relative will assist.

Whereas most Saudi 11 year olds must settle for just a goat.
