(MediaShift) Back in the late ’50s, TV advertising and televised debates transformed politics by allowing nationwide audiences to see candidates in action beyond newsreels. But televised politics also brought sound bites and an emphasis on telegenic candidates, and with it the risk that style would be valued over substance.. (For an overview of the history of presidential campaign TV commercials, check out this excellent online exhibit, The Living Room Candidate.)

Eisenhower: Never Had it So Good,
The need for “change” has been a recurring theme in presidential campaign ads since 1952, when Dwight Eisenhower told America ”It’s time for a change.”

Candidates running for the U.S. presidency in 2008 meet their voters through online video and YouTube formats where voters may also be able to engage them in video dialogues.

Where does it go from here?

Why is a Foreign National allowed to engage in political fundraising for a US presidential race?

His concert appearance has in kind value which would be all over an complaint against an RNC fundraiser.

Elton John is English. I don’t think it’s entirely appropriate for him to be fundraising for a foreign candidate.

I believe the FEC has rules regarding “in kind” contributions.

Of course the fact you have a british homosexual pushing a prohomosexual democrat speaks volumes.

PANTSUIT IN THE WIND
Tune: "Candle in the Wind"

Hello, Crusty Queen,
Though you never cleaned it at all,
You had the guts to wear your suit
While those around you crawled.
They crawled out of the odor
And they kept on holding their nose,
They shouted from a distance
And they begged you, "Change your clothes."

And it seems to me you wore your clothes
Like a pantsuit in the wind,
Never knowing what to change to
When the stains set in.
And I would have liked to have worn one,
But it would make me ill.
Your perfume wore out long before
Your pantsuit ever will.

(With thanks again to Charles Henrickson)

Huma is traveling tonight on a plane
I can see the red tail lights heading for spain
Oh and I can see Huma waving goodbye
God it looks like Huma, must be the clouds in my eyes

They say spain is pretty though Ive never been
Well Huma says its the best place that shes ever seen
Oh and she should know, shes been there enough
Lord I miss Huma, oh I miss her so much

Huma my sister you are older than me
Do you still feel the pain of the scars that wont heal
Your eyes have died but you see more than i
Huma you’re a star in the face of the sky

Huma is traveling tonight on a plane
I can see the red tail lights heading for spain
Oh and I can see Huma waving goodbye
God it looks like Huma, must be the clouds in my eyes
Oh God it looks like Huma, must be the clouds in my eyes

Elton John is racist? /sarcasm

'Finger in the wind' would be a good second act after 'The Bitch is Back', followed by 'Honkey Cat' (from the 'Honky Château' album), and 'Cry to Heaven'. It would be fitting if he ended with 'Nobody Wins'.

A great line from the BBC show “Top Gear.”

James May: [referring to the Rolls Royce Phantom drophead] “You don’t really want to ride around in the back of this car unless you are the Queen of England or Elton John. Which is the same thing, really.”

MIDI - CAMP GRENADA

Hey black pant suit…are you dusty…worn by Rodham…are you crusty?
For two decades…you have lasted…you’d not squeeze her big butt if sometime she fasted

You had touched the…evil lady…when the softballs…came from Katy
Once you thought you’d…really lost ‘er…when she took you off to dump her boyfriend Foster

You were there for…depositions…she proclaimed them…inquisitions
There was comfort…you’re providing…on the day the billing records she was hiding

Are you wool or…polyester…Carville may know…go ask Chester
You can’t fit a-…round her belly…you need washing…Pakistanis say you’re smelly

Please be honest…was she plastered…when she screamed “You F.J. Bastard”
Did she hurl…when she read “Leaves of Grass” was given to that porky girl
Would you welcome the excitement…if you’re worn to her indictment
And by chance…do you think you’d survive if she should wet her pants

Wait a minute…is “exquisite”…what you hear when…lezbos visit
Have you had a…corsage clipped on…like a blue dress please tell us, have you been dripped on

Were you out in the Rose Garden…Bill was late and...begged her pardon
We know there was…trouble plenty…she learned what he did with his Arturo Fuente

EJ: "I'm not a politician but I believe in the work that Hillary Clinton does," he said. "I'm excited to support Hillary by performing at what will be a truly memorable night."

EJAF, Elton's AID's charity in the US is said to have one of the highest rates of donations to actual charitable cause which the Clinton's have been involved with. Elton does pay US Taxes from his concerts. He is also a part time resident of Atlanta and currently is in the middle of a Las Vegas residency.

Sir Elton John Photography Collection is also promoted and stored in Atlanta.

I believe the legal thinking is he is donating his talent, not personal money, and so is not directly donating to her campaign. Which could be legal. I might be wrong, as I cannot find where it would be. I suspect the attorneys for the Clinton campaign checked it out thoroughly as it shows up as very high profile in this type of event.

Billy Crystal, Elvis Costello (Brit and married at EJ London estate) and the Wallflowers headlined the event at New York's historic Beacon Theater, which earned $1.5 million for Mrs. Clinton's presidential bid.

Elvis Costello (a Brit also living part time in the US) headlined an event at New York's historic Beacon Theater, which earned $1.5 million for Mrs. Clinton's presidential bid. or see my post 30 above on EJ.

They are British expatriates living in both countries, but working, for what I can find in various endeavors mostly out of the US.

Costello is married to Diana Krall(London estate of EJ) and their sons were born in NYC. He also works with Warner Bros.

you can’t evade campaign contribution laws by creating an “in kind” fiction. IE giving away free my employee’s time, donating office equiptment, donating my truck fleet...

Elton John gets paid SIGNIFICANT monies for a performance and that can and should be treated the same as a contribution for value.

Elvis Costello's (Brit) performance in part raised $1.5 million for Mrs. Clinton's presidential bid shows precident.

"The Federal Election Reform Act of 1974, which limited individual contributions to $1,000, substantially changed the political fundraising game. Generating money at the grassroots level, particularly during the primaries, is now a matter of survival. With no limits on the amount of time stars can donate to their favorite politician's cause, it's not surprising top-notch talents are courted assiduously and negotiations as to the extent of their participation ......."

EJ's first foray into American politics was when he helped Al Gore raise money in 2000 with a concert at which he declared, "I think you're going to win it, baby." (The fundraiser was not a "concert" - it was a "per plate" dinners, hosted by and at the home of a US citizen-Novell Corp. Chief Executive Eric Schmidt.

The scope of the current statute, 2 U.S.C. SS 441e, clearly reaches beyond elections for Federal office, and the term contribution as used here expressly includes "money or other thing of value." Compare 2 U.S.C. SS 441a. Accordingly, the Commission concludes that a foreign national artist would be prohibited by 2 U.S.C. SS 441e from donating his uncompensated volunteer services to the Committee to create an original work of art for the Committee's use in fundraising.

However, EJ owns homes in the US, business/ Elton John Aids Foundation charity (where all royalities went to his charity) endeavors in the US. He's had a three-year residency at Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas, even though his primary residence is Woodside, Windsor, England, has a home in the infamous "Buckhead" (and FReeper) part of Atlanta, Georgia and a home in Nice.

Candidates have done concerts for years. Costello, in my search is the only other and most recent foreign that can be considered part of a concert fund raiser and not a dinner (Gore) at some big name "host's home". If you want to consider Hillary, the host, and she is also extending an invitation to you for her fundraising concert at a "reserved" arena/ party location with a main GUEST being Sir Elton John attended by other guests who wish to contribute directly to her campaign.
