The post to which I was responding expressed moral indignation at the practice, apparently without regard to the legalities. I was responding that I didn't see a grounds for moral indignation here.
From a legal perspective, your post seems spot on to me. Are you a lawyer?
You’ve obviously never been to Vegas. LOL
“Starbucks isnt a fast food restaurant.”
I didn’t say it was, as far as tipping people at the counter for drawing your drink I don’t see the difference.
The decision was 4 sentences....and just affirms state law.
Well, a lot of baristas might be getting $1000. Lucky them.
I didnt say it was, as far as tipping people at the counter for drawing your drink I dont see the difference.
You tip in your local bar, don’t you?
I found your receipt! Hope you tipped after this.
IANAL — just had several fights with management over my years dealing with technicians and field supervision. Like you said, it’s up to the team, but IF Starbucks set the policy, then yes they owe the money. One guy asked me once to “show me where it’s written ...” — I responded we don’t write things down, because then we’d have to follow them! LOL!
I have to assume that you tip at the fast food counters as well, especially if they set out a tip jar.
Within two weeks of starting, I had worked my way up to "hostess." Orders were placed with a cashier when the customer entered; I seated them, served their food, refilled their drinks...standard full waitress treatment (except for the ordering).
Because I was good at my job, I was always scheduled at the busy times...Sunday after Church for example...and was assigned to the large groups that typically visited on said days (sometimes 15-20 people).
I was routinely thanked for my service, and LARGE tips of $20-40 were left for me...but I couldn't take them. Their position was that the "entire restaurant experience" was being rewarded. Idiotic.
They did not divide the tips, but put them into a "jar" for a special Christmas Party...that never occurred. Most of the time, the busboys pocketed the money.
We were allowed to keep the money if the customer handed it to us personally; as though anyone would ever think to do so.
Yes, I quit after 6 months. I still think that was one of the most bizarre policies ever, an excellent way to make certain that you have a lackluster waitstaff.
I don’t eat fast food — but the last time I checked, it was against most franchise agreements to set up a tip jar. However, if there is a tip jar, I’ll at least throw the change from the order in it. Having worked in the food/beverage industry, I know the value of a good tip to the employee and customer.
It was just something a little cartoon squirel named, “Foamy,” said. Kind of a funny rant.
“I dont eat fast food but the last time I checked, it was against most franchise agreements to set up a tip jar”
It is a staple in the Mexican fast food restaurants. I spent years in the food/beverage business as well, and always saw tips as unamerican and degrading.
I hope that you tip your plumber, especially when he does something special like crawl under your house into mud and filth and spends six hours wet, cold and disgusting, to fix a broken pipe. He doesn’t make any more pay for that than he does doing clean, warm inside work.
People in the restaurant business count on tips. In regards to plumbers, etc., I don’t tip them, but always offer coffee, tea, soda, etc. and I have a friend in the entertainment business who always lays a couple of tickets to concerts, sporting events, etc. on workers. Only guy I know who can get a plumber out to his house at 11 at night to fix the hot water heater.
Very simple formula — treat people right and they’ll treat you right.
“Only guy I know who can get a plumber out to his house at 11 at night to fix the hot water heater.”
You don’t tip your plumber, and where do you live that the plumbers won’t respond to emergency calls?
Do you really believe a server is the equiv. of a plumber?
Busted water heaters aren’t considered emergency calls — they can wait until the next day.
