BELGRADE, Serbia — Serbia's war crimes prosecutor is looking into reports that dozens of Serbs captured by rebels during the war in Kosovo were killed so their organs could be trafficked, the prosecutor's office said Friday.
The Serbian prosecutor's office said it received "informal statements" from investigators at the U.N. tribunal in The Hague, Netherlands, that dozens of Serbs imprisoned by Kosovo Albanian rebels were taken to neighboring Albania in 1999 and killed so their organs could be harvested and sold to international traffickers.
Bruno Vekaric, the Serbian prosecutor's spokesman, said later on B92 radio that Serbian war crimes investigators have also received their own information about alleged organ trafficking, but not enough for a court case. Vekaric said Serb investigators also received reports suggesting there might be mass graves in Albania containing the bodies of the Serb victims.
Serbian media reported that the issue was brought into the open in a book written by former U.N. war crimes prosecutor Carla Del Ponte that is to be published in Italy on April 3.
According to Serbia's Beta news agency, which carried parts of the book in Serbian, Del Ponte said her investigators had been informed that some 300 Serbs were killed for organ trafficking.
The Beta report quoted Del Ponte as saying in the book that her investigators were told the imprisoned Serbs were first taken to prison camps in northern Albania where the younger ones were picked out, and their organs were later sold abroad.
“KLA sold Kosovo Serb organs in Albania”

Sounds like a Robin Cook novel.
How could our colorful, quaint, and oh-so-loyal allies, the brave Albanians possibly be guilty?
Just consider the time element. Running a worldwide crime empire trafficking in women, stolen cars, heroin, extortion, kidnapping, and smuggling takes a lot of time. There is no way the Albanians could have branched out into stolen organs and other body parts.
Come on, fellows, there are only 24 hours in a day. Not even an Albanian can steal time! By Allah, the nonsense you infidels believe ... who ya gonna trust ... our allies or your lying eyes?
I’m suprised we haven’t yet heard about a UN “organs-for-food” scandal. That sounds like something Kofi or his son would cook up.
That was my first thought, too. "Coma". And frankly, when I first read about it, I said, "Nah. Couldn't be. That's just too ghoulish -- living people killed for their organs and knowing what's happening to them." Then I started researching it -- yes, it's happening. There are even several anti-organ trafficking organizations. Made me want to vomit.
Chances are that they deliberately wrote false stories to cover up real events.
It would be interesting to search for the articles from 1999 where Serbs were accused of forcibly taking blood from Albanians and find out who wrote them.
Chances are that they deliberately wrote false stories to cover up real events.
Nervous ha?

some of comments:
RE miri
“had had to give up on this case because further investigation had proved impossible.”
And it was impossible because I’m sure the Albanian government (from true Albania, now that we have two Albanias with help of the US) would not let the ICTY investigators anywhere near that house or the mass graves...And we all know the huge support that K Albania had an has from the True Albania...
Have you ever thought this is one of the reasons? No, of course not, the poor little Serbian girl that was stoned while she was playing in her garden in Kosovo was just a imagination of a small child, isn’t it?
THE TRUTH IS OUT THERE...

RE “This is some sickening claims. I feel ashamed that KLA is linked to such crimes. I personally would act on this issue if I knew that anyone would get involved in such horrific inhuman act. I have no doubt that this propaganda is coming from Mr Kostunica, he is clearly following Milosevics footsteps before Milosevic won his election in 1989. Someone should be held accountable for such claims and should be prosecuted because this is not doing any good to anyone. I know this isnt true.”
You obviously haven’t heard that the Serbian government is trying to stop this book of being published! As for Kostunica’s propaganda, I don’t know if Kostunica hates Del Ponte more or it is viceversa...and you are obvioulsy not aware that Del Ponte is not a favorite person in Serbia as well.
As for the claim that you are ashamed that KLA is linked to such things. Well darling, you should be ashamed of many things done by the KLA. Start with the killings of fellow Albanians that did not want to get involved with KLA...
Last but not least, you say you know this is not true...so proove it! That should be easy...

What incentive does Del Ponte, who has not lifted one finger for Serb victims of war crimes, to lie about the KLA that the Hague has done nothing to prosecute?
The KLA supporters on this website will defend the indefensible, while whining incessantly about crimes that never occurred against them.
Typical KLA hypocrisy.

This should not surprise anyone.
The possibility that this is true is not so far fetched.
Procuring human organs in Albania for European trafficking is a well know fact.
Albania is often identified as a source country for organ trafficking by various international organizations.
According the American Medical Association, Albania is one of the countries identified as destination for the so-called transplant tourism.
The Organs Watch, a research and documentation center states that, “In the Middle East residents of the Gulf States (Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, and Oman) have for many years traveled to India, the Philippines, and to Eastern Europe to purchase kidneys made scarce locally due to local fundamentalist Islamic teachings that allow organ transplantation (to save a life), but prohibit organ harvesting from brain-dead bodies.
As disgusting as this topic is,there is a lot of money to be made in organ trafficking.
Instead of denying it, you need to educate yourselves about it and then speak out against it.

Is this why Serbian authorities were making pressure on Italy not to publish Carla De Pontes book?! This information would terrify Albanians in Kosovo, not Serbs in Belgrade. So, what was the reason to stop the publication of the book then? Fortunately, the book is coming up and we are going to be able to read more. One thing I know for sure is that such a thing never happened. But, very soon this amazing story is going to be forgotten by true stories about Serbian Government reluctance to collaborate with The Tribunal of The Hague to prison War Criminal fugitives such as Ratko Mladich and Radovan Karadjich. You cannot shift the attention that De Ponte has been drawing to Serbian War Criminals to some gossips about KLA. This is a real Serbian propaganda that never changes even after all the loses. But the World is aware of Serbian miracles, so dont expect someone to believe these delusional claims. They are trying to sell this lie before the book is in our hands. Wait and watch is the best policy here.

The facts that you are giving are very, very fragile...
We all know that trafficking with human organs is a very lucrative job all around the world this days...
Do you really think that this operations are donne in legal hospitals? And that it is impossible to transport the organs? Come on, don’t be funny...Nowdays, EVERYTHING is possible if you have THE MONEY to pay for it...
An as for doctors, Mengele was a doctor wasn’t he? And he did all those attrocities and not even for the money. Imagine now days, what people are ready to do for A LOT of money. Sadly, some of them are doctors who forget the vows they gave...
So all the excusses you give would be refused in any court, even in Albania (ofcourse, if you do not bribe the judge...)
Have a nice day you too...

Ilir, removing body organs is far easier than putting them in, especially if you have little concern for the patient, or in this case prisoner, you are taking it from.
And as for survivors I think the suggestion, with the talks of mass graves, is that there were none. The KLA sponsored doctors were said to have removed the organs and then the people were killed, which would also suggest that there was a lack of anasthetic used. I mean why waste expensive medicines if you don’t care what happens to them and they will be killed anyway.
If you consider that Albanians are responsible for a lot of the people trafficking, the idea that they should take the organs from those they hate most and sell them for far more than they can get for a person, would make sense as barbaric as it is. I mean a single kidney would go for $10,000 or more on the world market and here you would get two from one person.
As hideous and barbaric as this sounds it all makes sense if you’re of a sick enough mind.
As for proving it, difficult when the Albanian prosecutor agrees with killing Serbs, which was a factual comment!
(Jim-UK, 21 March 2008 21:34)
I am not surprised.
For those here who don’t remember:
- regular vanishing of Yugoslavian soldiers in Kosovo since WWII
- during seventies and eighties by YU government silenced cases of Kosovo Albanian surgeons sterilizing Serbian boys and misconducting professionally with Serbian patients, miscarriages, ...etc.
- deliberate phenol poisoning of river Ibar...
list could be much longer
(rain, 21 March 2008 23:03)
It comes as no surprise that the KLA and Albanians were low enough to do something like this. Those Albanians should be brought to justice and their detestable conduct brought before Europe as a show of who the EU is championing as “democrats”.
