In the annals of judicial imperialism, we have arrived at a strange new chapter. A California court ruled this month that parents cannot "home school" their children without government certification. No teaching credential, no teaching. Parents "do not have a constitutional right to home school their children," wrote California appellate Justice Walter Croskey.
The 166,000 families in the state that now choose to educate their children at home must be stunned. But at least one political lobby likes the ruling. "We're happy," the California Teachers Association's Lloyd Porter told the San Francisco Chronicle. He says the union believes all students should be taught only by "credentialed" teachers, who will in due course belong to unions.

My wife and I are in the process of adopting 2 (maybe 3) girls (if the case worker will just hurry up :) ).
My wife plans on quitting work outside the home and homeschooling.
We may have to cut back on some things, but, they will get a real education.
Thread crapping again? Your children aren’t homeschooled so why bother to join the thread - what happens in the homeschool community doesn’t effect you at all. If it irritates you so much to see that homeschooled children are doing better academically than their public schooled counterparts - move along. Then you won’t get your panties in such a wad.

Do you not understand the concept of calculating test score averages? Home educated children ON AVERAGE score at least one grade level above public schoolers. ON AVERAGE. By high school age, the difference is three to four grade levels.
That means that YOUR kids could be geniuses and still, the home educated kids score ON AVERAGE higher than public schoolers.

The higher AVERAGE test scores of the home educated do not mean your kids are illiterate.

Heh, I learned in Stat 200 (that was considered Statistics for math dummies like me)that statistics can be manipulated. And, yes on the average we can say that homeschooled children have a lower illiteracy rate or higher test scores than public school children BUT that statistic doesn’t necessarily mean than a homeschooled education is better than a public school education because other correlating factors have to be considered (economic and social). For instance, for a child to be homeschooled, the family has to be well off enough financially for one parent to stay home (not work)or flexible enough to do both. In addition, homeschooling families value education enough to put all that time into their child’s education. As a result, the pool of public school kids included in any statistics, includes a lot more kids from single parent homes, welfare kids, and kids whose parents couldn’t care less about parenting to begin with, those with victim mentality, and all that other nonsense. Public school education isn’t a one way street -parents and children have to work at it, care about education, take responsibility for learning, etc. and some just don’t.

Parenting, what goes on in the home, is far more important than everything else. The problems with education today are similar to the problems this country has in general, imo. Too many people not taking responsibility for themselves and their families, wanting something for nothing, etc.

this is our story! we adopted two brothers and began homeschooling immediately... the older of our two sons had just turned 5 when we adopted him... i say this without wanting to offend anybody--i love, love, love our homeschooling lifestyle... every sacrifice has been well worth it... regardless of the academic portion, my husband and i have our sons' hearts... we are in our seventh year of homeschooling...

Ha, typical but I’ll answer you. The topic of the thread at the top was *certifying parents*. As a certified in many areas secondary teacher, I assumed (wrongly) that it was about certification. Then, I just read some posts and decided to reply to humblegunner (did I commit a board faux pas? a crime?).

In fact, it’s you and humblegunner who have tossed the shots on this thread. Someone pointed out that a) you don’t have to be rich to homeschool and b) you made the mistake of not reading the article before posting and now “homeschoolers” are arrogant and anti-conservative?

The article was specifically about the battle here in California regarding the certification of homeschooling parents. It’s very clear.
Check the national data on the success that home schooled students have enjoyed, over the past 10 years, and perhaps that will allow you to take the personalities out of it?
Are the FR posters really making ANY implications about your kids, or are you perhaps being a little oversensitive?
