Web host suspends site planned for anti-Koran film

AMSTERDAM, March 23 (Reuters) - A U.S.-based web service, which Islam critic and Dutch right-wing lawmaker Geert Wilders planned to use to show his film critical of the Koran, said on Saturday that it had inactivated the site due to complaints.

"This site has been suspended while Network Solutions is investigating whether the site's content is in violation of the Network Solutions Acceptable Use Policy," the company said on the site www.fitnathemovie.com.

Wilders, who has given few details about his 15-minute film, has said he plans to release 'Fitna' on the Internet before the end of the month after Dutch broadcasters declined to show it. Fitna is a Koranic term sometimes translated as "strife".

This is rather exceptional if I am understanding this correctly. Network Solutions doesn't just host sites; it is also a registrar for many domains. I wonder if NS would consider suspending the name server reference for a site it doesn't host but whose domain name is registered with it.

BTW - no one should ever register with them - they charge way too much and have pathetic customer service.

Anyway - hopefully it will be posted up on Youtube if it isn't there already.

Reminds me of an old Kung Fu edisode: Cain witnesses a bank robbery. The sheriff comes and asks if anyone in the crowd can identify the robbers. Cain is the only one in the crowd willing to identify them.

I agree, but out of habit I use them. Can you suggest a cheaper, reliable alternative?

Wouldn’t this be the kind of thing that could best be distributed by a peer-to-peer model (i.e. Napster). Isn’t peer-to-peer server software widely available now?

My impression is that Network Solutions is refusing to host the website, but not refusing to register the domain name. If that is correct, it will not be difficult to find another web hosting service for the site.
