Peres: If Golan returned, it will be under Iranian-Syrian control

Israel will not agree to a deal with Syria involving the return of the Golan Heights, President Shimon Peres said Sunday.

"If the Golan is given back, it will boost Iran's influence in Lebanon and the territory will effectively be under Iranian-Syrian control," said Peres.

Cheney said the US was concerned by developments in Syria, specifically about Damascus supplying weapons to Hizbullah.

The US vice president added that he did not get the impression that Syrian President Bashar Assad was interested in dialogue with Israel.

Peres also told Cheney that the US and Europe were apparently ignoring Iran's ballistic missile development.

"Iran's only intentions of developing ballistic missiles with nuclear warheads are to destroy Israel and threaten the entire world," he added.

Cheney vowed that the US would do everything it could to deal with the Iranian nuclear threat.

Peres insisted that until the end of the current US administration's term, several goals could be reached. He said negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians must be focused on with a view to economic development. He stressed that special attention must be given to the threats posed by Iran, Hizbullah and Hamas.

Cheney said that the US would do its utmost to advance the Israeli-Palestinian peace process.

Cheney also met with opposition leader Binyamin Netanyahu on Sunday. Netanyahu told the US vice president that regarding the Iranian nuclear issue, all options must be on the table.

Netanyahu went on to say that if Israel withdraws from any part of Jerusalem, Hizbullah and Hamas would take over there and establish "another Iranian base" next to Israel, similar, he said, to the Hizbullah-ruled base in the North and the Hamas-ruled base in the South.

After his meeting with Cheney, Netanyahu told reporters that in his opinion, Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni had effectively admitted that negotiations over the division of the capital were already being conducted and said they must not be allowed to continue.

Netanyahu also called on Shas to withdraw from the coalition so as not to enable discussions over the division of Jerusalem and to prevent the possibility of a Palestinian flag being hoisted on the Temple Mount.

If we took out Syria, a big part of the problems in the ME would dissipate. Maybe it's time to bite the bullet and do so.

If Israel is ignorant enough to give the Golan Heights back to the Palis,Syra, Iran, then I don’t want one American fighting for them when they are annhilated. Because it will only be a matter of time. The aura of invinicibility is well past over now.

If the US,Europe and Israel are ignorant enough to let Iran develop nuclear technology - then I will do all I can to disallow my sons from entering our military. Because it will be obvious to me at that point, that the next battle will be a spiritual battle as mass pandemonium and degradation spin out of control.

Interesting timing of these comments as Syria masses troops on the Lebanon border. The Israelis say things for a reason.

Maybe there is hope if even a nitwit appeaser like Peres realizes this. Israel gives back the Golan, all it will get is a worthless “promise” that Syria will break with Iran—if anything the opposite will happen. If , Iran, Syria, and Hezbollah will claim a great victory, boosting their morale and decimating Israel’s. At that point, you might start seeing mass migrations of Jews elsewhere—which would be the true death knell of the Jewish state.

Well, that’s what part of the Iraq war was about. US occupation of Iraq neatly surrounds both Iran and Syria. Checkmate.

....US occupation of Iraq neatly surrounds both Iran and Syria.....

Troops on the Lebanon border are ineffective against invasion on the road from Israel to Damascus or on the road from Baghdad to Damascus.

As long as we are in Iraq, Israel will be safe from any Iranian or Syrian attack.

What Israel needs to do and do fast is to wipe Hizbullah and Hamas from the face of the earth.

For what it is worth, I completely agree with you. We are approaching a very-well demarcated line, at which point the notion of American as a Shining City on a Hill, should be relegated to history alone.

There was an "article" in the Onion a long time ago, where the US apologized to the rest of the world for liberating France. "What were we thinking?!"

“Israel will not agree to a deal with Syria involving the return of the Golan Heights, President Shimon Peres said Sunday.”

To do otherwise would be suicidal.
