BOYNTON BEACH, Fla. -- Investigators said a Manalapan teenager was caught causing $24,800 worth of damage to a soccer field after the On-Star system in his car tipped off police that he was the culprit.

Authorities said the 17-year-old spun a 2007 GMC Denali to make "donuts" all over the soccer field at Saint Joseph's School located at 3300 S. Seacrest Blvd. in Boynton Beach on Nov.21, according to a police report.

Police used On-Star GPS records to link the teen to the scene at the time of the vandalism, according to the report.

A police subpoenae of OnStar documents revealed that the company received a "collision notification" and that an OnStar employee contacted the teen, whose voice was then recorded.

The 17-year-old is facing charges of reckless driving and criminal mischief.

I guess OnStar notified the police of the car’s location after the car’s OnStar unit transmitted the “collision detected” signal. Whoops.

24 Grand? It must have been smokable. I'm sure glad 55 and 57 Pontiacs didn't have GPS!

Somewhere, my old science teacher is smiling. He lived on a corner, and everyone used to "turf burn" though his yard.

The grass is not so special. The stupidity of this moron tearing up property that is not his own is relevant and he should be liable for all damages and then some.

If it was your grass it would be special.

I think the phrase is 'wood shampoo" and I agree wholeheartedly...

Before our annual hate-filled football game with arch-rival Boca Ciega High School in 1962, we snuck onto their field on Tuesday night and wrote “Screw BCHS” in huge letters on the grass with a herbicide.

By game time Saturday night, the big brown letters on the green grass were perfect.

Just what kind of records would be available from Onstar? How long do they keep them? Are we talking GPS fixes here, or cell tower triangulation records? (Difference being, the former might place him in the middle of the soccer field, while the latter would just indicate he was in the neighborhood.)

My concern here is whether Onstar maintains accurate tracking history on all Onstar subscribers, or was this vehicle stolen so as to be the object of an LE search aided by Onstar.

I participated in similiar tomfoolery in my youth...

I recall only one donut-making night, in a dirt parking area. We had to wash the car afterward, the dust was terrible. Whoopee.
