Public anger against illegal immigrants, already entrenched in parts of Northern Virginia, is seeping into Maryland. With legislators facing unprecedented demands to take action, fears of a crackdown are spreading among illegal immigrants in a state that has been more tolerant of them.
A record 20 bills targeting illegal immigrants have been introduced in the state legislature this session. Although none of the bills is expected to survive, their supporters are far more vocal and organized than in the past, and the movement has gained recent support in Maryland communities that include Mount Rainier, Gaithersburg and Taneytown.
"If there is any doubt that people like me truly represent the overwhelming majority on this issue, show some courage and put it on a referendum," Margaret Montuori of Bethesda told the House Judiciary Committee at a hearing last week.
Last fall, a Washington Post poll found that about half of Maryland residents considered illegal immigration a problem and that Marylanders were more apt than Virginians to call it a "very serious" problem. Eighty-five percent of those surveyed said they wanted state and local government to take an active role in dealing with the issue.
The clamor is causing alarm among the thousands of day laborers, dishwashers and babysitters who live and work without legal papers in Maryland and who are beginning to see refugees from Virginia in the busy Latino enclaves along the bus routes of Montgomery and Prince George's counties.
"Everywhere you go now, the first thing they ask you for is papers," Juan Perez, 28, a Central American construction worker, said outside a gas station in Langley Park one recent morning.

Wow...people breaking our nation's law actually being afraid of getting caught! Just...wow.
</dripping sarcasm>
Bee...ohh...ohh...aitch...ohh...ohh
Wow.
In spite of Gov. O’Mallard, the citizens are trying to move the motto away from, “We’re Almost As Bad As New Jersey.”
As a lifelong Marylander, all I can say is THANK GOODNESS!!!!!
My sister, who has been looking for a “tide me over ‘til I can find a job-job, told me yesterday that she is extremely frustrated because all of the “smaller” jobs she has applied for as she’s looking for the “real” job have been taken by illegals.
Here are Jaun's papers:
Actually I was surprised to find the word illegal in front of immigrant as many times as I did. Who would have thought the Washington Post would report that there is such a person as a illegal immigrant?
The trend against illegal aliens is slowly and steadily growing. Illegals would be wise to take notice and leave the country voluntarily.
Uhhhhhh, wrong....the state's stupid legislature has been tolerant of them, the citizens NEVER have been nor will be....
“I am illegal, too, but I don’t hurt anyone. I am helping this community grow. We all are. Just look around!”
Yeah, I’m looking all right. At the jails, at the emergency rooms, at the schoolrooms, at the latest local news regarding the latest drophouse finds.
You are not helping, you are taking what doesn’t belong to you. You refuse to demand change in your own corrupt government, so you take advantage of our government.
You are hurting far more than you are helping. And I, for one, am quite fed up with it.
With a looming economic slowdown and possible recession, illegal aliens are going to feel the heat even more.
"I'm a law-abiding Illegal Alien!"
Thats like a theif saying “Look, I help the economy. When I’ve stolen something, the person I stole from has to go by another replacement. I help the local fences by providing them with product. I spend the money I get from the fences and so on. Everybody wins.”
bump
They shouldn’t have voted for O’Malley. He wants to give them drivers licenses too.
It's time we took a page from Mexico's playbook and denied any and every person who does not have proof of citizenship any and all access to the things they've been scamming us out of for decades.
This is not unreasonable, either. I had to provide my birth certificate, SSN, passport, and submit to a full background check just to have a job with my employer. Why the hell should illegal aliens get a pass on having to share the burden of proof of citizenship when I, a third-generation American, have to surrender my privacy in the name of "security"?
Hehehehe! Now there's an oxymoron! ;-)
Come on....family values, law abiding, etc.......
This was in our local paper today. Of course our PC correct rag NEVER mentions whether they are legal or illegal.

“Just across University Boulevard, a battered sedan with Virginia tags pulled up in front of a convenience store. The driver, a carpenter from Guatemala named Raul Romano, 40, said he and his family had recently fled Prince William County, their home for eight years, after it enacted a law allowing police to question immigrants about their legal status.”
Enforcing the law works!!
