I see a decided problem in the future, if not with this current event. This type of behavior by federal agents only works if whoever they molest is unarmed and not expecting any assault.

However, the Iraq war alone has produced a large number of men who are more than familiar with the techniques and tactics being used here. And probably far more capable than the current crop of federal agents. And while some of them may end up working for the federal police agencies, many will not.

The incident at Waco proved that even civilians can significantly resist blundering efforts by federal agents to use aggressive means against them. But had the Waco compound and its surrounding area been prepared for their attack, federal agent casualties could have been in the dozens.

The advantage given to SWAT tactics and violations of civility only work if the people being assaulted remain civil. When this is no longer the case, diplomacy and persuasion must be used, instead of violence, intimidation, and coercion.

SWAT tactics, as such, have only been in use since the 1970s. Before then, civil courtesy was respected by police as a necessary part of their activities. The use of SWAT, except in grave circumstances, may again be phased out, as it seems to convey no advantage in the long run.

This case is the exact opposite of Waco. The fugitives had a huge arsenal of guns, bombs and IEDs, but the U.S. Marshals arrested them and their supporters without injuring anyone.
