Outsourced passport work scrutinized
The Washington Times ^ | March 26, 2008 | Bill Gertz

Posted on 03/26/2008 4:27:20 PM PDT by Clintonfatigued

The inspector general of the Government Printing Office today said his office is conducting an "end-to-end" review of the agency's production of electronic passports.

GPO Inspector General J. Anthony Ogden said the review is part of the office's work plan and will look at the outsourcing of some passport components, such as computer chips embedded in travel documents.

The comments follow a report in today's editions of The Washington Times quoting congressional and GPO officials who raised security questions about the use of foreign contractors in the process.

Big Government and Big Business have outsourced everything, even national security. The only thing left to outsource is the nation’s borders.

If we cannot manufacture a passport in this country, we just as well wave the white flag and surrender.

Passports out-sourced to the Red Chinese, military tanker aircraft being built by Frenchies - when do the idiots in Washington get around to worrying about the American people?

We get our computers repaired by Indians and our passports printed by Chinese. What a country!

“The only thing left to outsource is the nation’s borders.”

The only thing left to outsource is the nation’s LEADERS.

Fixed...

“Unbelievable.” My thoughts as well. I just applied for the Passport card. Glad to hear the government is providing (NOT)security for my privacy and documents.

How stupid! Why don’t we just contract out our armies? After all those foreigners will work cheaper won’t they and they’ll surely be committed to the freedom of our country.

I’m pretty sure if we look hard enough we’ll find that a politician or government employee stands to benefit from the deal somewhere along the way. This is a big reason the government has become so expensive we can’t even fund it with all the new hidden taxes and records amounts of tax income. We could thank our corrupt politicians for selling our country right out from under us.

On the news today they said the passport outsourcing deal was a big source of profit for some agency. They charge the US government $15 for a passport, and get it made overseas for only $7. However they are not supposed to be making a profit.

Obviously, the bigger factor is that if the security chips are being made overseas, how can we ever trust the system? Sometimes you just have to laugh.

I saw this earlier from The Drudge Report.

Glad to see you've pinged a bunch of the crew.

Holdonnow, if you haven't done so yet, is this worth using your bully pulpit?

Cheers!

It used to be A. Pole who made this his lead issue, but he got removed from FR a while back. AuntB sometimes covers things of economic interest, but she specializes in illegal immigration.

I do a lot of election-oriented posts, but I have a wide variety of issues.

The GPO claimed that no US company knew how to assemble the passports. So they are using SmartTrac in Thailand, which reports that China had stolen its patented technology.

“Free trade” advocates like Bill Gates can see the consequences of using the excuse “Americans can’t do the work” in the passport screwup here, if they care.

Pathetic. Does the word “security” mean anything to the State Department?

This is much bigger than the story tells. Listening to Michael Savage tonight he was taking about how the GPO (Government Printing Office) made a $100 MILLION profit on the deal even though they are supposed to be a non-profit agency. They proceeded to lavish themselves with huge bonuses, expensive trips to Las Vegas, Paris, Hawaii, etc. One guy even spent $10,000 on PHOTOGRAPHS of HIMSELF to hang in his office!

There is some almost unbelievable corruption going on.
