"Only in America do we think we have to speak one language"-Dr. W. Terrell Jones-Vice-Provost for Educational Equity-Penn State University
That quote comes from Dr. Jones as he provided "diversity training" to employees of the Central York School District in York County, Pennsylvania.
We've had a language controversy in Philadelphia where a cheesesteak shop posted a sign asking people to use English when making their orders.
The "Human Relations Commission" said there was nothing discriminatory about the sign in the midst of all the publicity.
But it looks like Dr. Jones was hoping to change opinion with his pitch as quoted above.
Now back to our eywitness account of the "diversity training."
"Jones liked to avoid talking about the hot topics head on using 'Middle East' when talking about Iraq and then he started to talk apparently about this idea of racial profiling.
Jones discussed how he talks to security people and tells them stuff like you can look all day for 'black shirted people who are shoplifting' and you will probably find them, but that doesn't prove that all the shoplifters are 'black shirted people.'
He was avoiding saying 'black' head on."
Racial profiling. I remember a controversy in Baltimore a few years ago when a rape suspect was described by his victim as a black male.
When that description ended up in a police memo, somehow the NAACP got ahold of it, leading to an angry reaction with accusations of "racial profiling." This led to a street protest in the neighborhood where the rape occurred.
The NAACP crowd of black protestors was met by angry neighborhood residents who were also black. The residents tried to tell the protestors that the victim of the rape was black and she had described her attacker as black.
When you get past all the "racial profiling" rhetoric the reality is that perps and victims of crime are disproportionately non-white.
Well, another excerpt from our eyewitness account of this "diversity training."
"Jones seemed to have this way of saying things without being direct in other areas. At one point he made a remark about other cultures being different and men being friendly with each other. He said that may bother us because we see it as a 'Brokeback Mountain kind of thing.'
Jones also did another 'values clarification' exercise as he called it."
Well that's enough for now. "Values clarification" seems to conjure up visions of indoctrination in amorality and from the eyewtiness description to come you won't be disappointed.
We'll try to cover that in later posts.
Dr. W. Terrell Jones is an idiot. Tell it to the Japanese or Koreans or FRENCH.
Dr. Jones is a fool.
Please tell us how forcing state and federal agencies to operate using several languages helps the American taxpayer.
obiviously Dr. W. Terrell Jones never tried to get a computer fixed. Were fast approaching a time when press 9 for English will be the norm.
A nation is “borders, language, and culture.” Only in an empire are cultures and languages forcibly joined in a political entity.
Maybe this guy should try to post a sign in English in Quebec.
How come he wrote the article in English?
Sounds like Jones puts both the “i”s in “idiot”.
Let me back that up:
Reacting to these events, Bourassa, in 1993, introduced Bill 86, which allowed English on outdoor commercial signs only if the French lettering was at least twice as large as the English.
Under the new law, Gwen Simpson and Wally Hoffman, owners of a small antique store near Montreal called “The Lyon and the Wallrus,” faced a $500 fine because the English and French on their sign were the same size. They contested the fine.
The Quebec court ruling in 1999 said the province can’t continue to impose restrictions on the use of languages other than French on commercial signs unless it can prove the fragility of the French language in Quebec society. But the Quebec Superior Count overturned that decision in April 2000, citing Quebec’s unique geographical situation as an enclave of French speakers on an English-speaking continent.
We be bein yoa mama be bein! Ah wants ta axe yoa quesion! Who yoa be bein yoa?
That's why students in other countries are keen to learn English.
The Japanese have one of the strongest societies in the world, because they are NOT diverse.
And no one is going to try to make the case that they are less successful because of their lack of diversity.
You may speak as many languages as you wish; you are free to do so here. Just don’t expect an answer unless you ask in English!
Yeah. We’re obviously so much stronger and better off as a country if we’re made up of ethnic populations living in insulated linguistic ghettos with no common cultural references, and who can’t speak to each other in a common language.
Where do they find these idiots?
But in America we think learning English might be superfluous?
What a crock.
Maybe we’d like to be able to communicate with each other?
Duh?
Since when do we have to speak only one language? I speak English, and people all around me speak Spanish. That’s two languages.
Maybe the guy can’t count.
You forgot ebonics.
