NAACP Says “Low Pants Bill” Is Discriminatory
Associated Press ^ | Mar 24, 2008

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) _ The Florida branch of the NAACP says a bill that would ban students from wearing their pants too low could lead to more legal trouble for black males.

Orlando Senator Gary Siplin’s bill was approved 28-11 last week by the Florida Senate.

The bill calls for no criminal sanctions, but it would prohibit students from wearing pants low so that they expose undergarments.

Violators would receive a warning for a first offense, and suspensions from school would be issued for each subsequent infraction.

NAACP President Adora Obi Nweze called it a “clearly discriminatory bill.’’

Other groups such as the Advancement Project, a Washington social advocacy organization, say the proposal is directed primarily at black males and could lead to arrests

somebody ought to explain the origins of “low pants”.
They’d pull ‘em up in a hurry. or maybe not.

I guess we discriminate in the Mr. ModelBreaker household. The no-underpants-showing rule is a firm fixture here. Hold it, is that the NAACP at the door. Guess I better call my attorney.

I’ve heard it originated with poorly-fitting prison uniforms, FWIW.

I didn’t realize that dressing like an idiot was a racial thing.

Operative words here: “...ban students...”. Dress codes have been quite common in schools in civilized countries for quite a while. Centuries, actually.

The NAACP needs to start doing something that warrants their continued existence, instead of being a nuisance to society.

Must not discriminate against the fashionably clueless. I don’t care who’s got their pants hanging off their bum with their underwear showing, they ALL look ridiculous. Same thing with wearing a baseball cap all askew. Just looks too clueless to dress themselves correctly.

From what I hear at the high school where I work..
Is that it started in prison , where a young or slight of build new inductee would be issued uniforms too large..
so it became a badge of honor allowing everyone to see you were
"INSIDE" and consequently a "BAD A$$"

This is the way they're wearing em in Homestead:

Notice the left hand keeping the pants from falling down to their ankles.

That’s what I heard—no belts in prison, hence saggy pants.

The good news is that cops are able to catch more fleeing felons. They spend so much energy trying to keep their pants up, they can’t run as fast.

I went to high school in the 80s...if we were caught with our underwear blatantly hanging out of our pants, you would’ve probably gotten a detention, if not worse.

Yes, I know I’m getting older and times change, but should we be subjected to having to look at some kid’s skinny ass?
