Muqtada al-Sadr apparently has had enough; he's offered a "truce" if the Iraqi government will stop attacking his men. I'm not close enough to the situation to know whether it would be better to accept the truce or continue disabling Sadr's militia, but the proposal seems like a clear indication that things haven't gone as Sadr intended.
This episode might prove to be, as President Bush suggested, a defining moment in Iraq's post-war history. The main knock on Maliki's government has been that it is a Shia instrument that has sometimes been infiltrated by radical Shia elements. Sunnis have often been suspicious of the government on this ground. The fact that Iraqi soldiers took the lead in rooting out Sadr's militia may demonstrate to Iraqis that Maliki's government represents all Iraqis, not just the Shia.

Will somebody please get up the guts to JDAM fatass once-and-for-all??!!!
Yeah, most of the MSM is pulling for the other team in this one...
Wanna bet that should a Dem win in Nov. media wil find that the country has “turned a corner” and things will be just fine.
Actually I don’t know if that is a good idea anymore. Sadr has indicated that he has given up the idea that a new true Islamic Nation would arise out of Iraq. Apparently after saying “God Willing” a thousand times he finally realized maybe God isn’t willing...
He represents a large group of poor that are worshippers of he and his father. If he was killed, I just wonder how many of them would/could be convinced that God wanted him sacrified to draw them together to fight for their “Islamic Nation”. Seeing him as a clergy almost powerless is perhaps better than having him dead and his followers saying he is advising God.
he isn’t saying “Uncle”..he’s saying, “I’m gettin my a*s kicked out here and need time to reload, resupply and acquire new recruits”..
I don’t think he wanted this rumble. The militias in Basra had fallen away from his influence and into stolen oil, mafia like actions, murder for hire, and blackmailing. He is becoming less & less of an influence and figurehead since he now has to operate out of the country.
Therefore, take him out!
Precisely. Let me get this straight: this guy is sitting in Iran, getting his reinforcements together while telling us he’s encouraging this “surrender”? Give me a break.
Fat ass! Are you talking about Al Gore or Sadr? I can think of several others who ought to be taken out also and one of them is here in the states.
More like....
Sadr says "WAIT"
Call me unromantic but I don’t buy for a minute the ancient saw about so-and-so becoming more formidable through martyrdom. This is what those on the losing end of a conflict have been saying to each other to console themselves from time immemorial.
Opinion about Mookie seems to be all over the map, even among those in the know. I’m holding with the opinion that killing fatass would bring a sigh of relief from all parties, perhaps especially his remaining “followers” and “backers” who are fed up with his multiple acts of cowardice and intransigence. I’m not saying it would have a magical effect but I do think it would help persuade a good many of his said worshippers to find an excuse to give up the gun.
As for the mullahs in Tehran, they would be free to hold open casting calls for a more reliable replacement, though I doubt anyone would want the job if Mookie came to a sticky end.
It would be very interesting to see the communications between Iran and Muqtada al-Sadr.
You just have to suspect we are getting bits of it!
I would not put it past Reverend Wright to honor Muqtada al-Sadr as (MOTY) Man Of The Year for 2008 thereby joining another of Hussein Obamas hero's Calypso Louie Farrakhan.
More like his masters in Iran aren't willing
Temporarily out of bullets ?
I think Powerline is behind the curve on this one. He’s called off the truce at least once.
IMHO, its not Saydr, its the Iranians they do not want a strong military build up there. They want to keep their influence safe in that area. The longer they keep the Iraq forces away the easier for them to train and arm their cronies.
Per Powerline: “I’m not close enough to the situation to know whether it would be better to accept the truce or continue disabling Sadr’s militia, but the proposal seems like a clear indication that things haven’t gone as Sadr intended.”
Did you read the post before you said Powerline is behind the curve?
