When a gay teenager was gunned down earlier this year at an Oxnard school, the violence resulted in the unexpected: Young people, gay and straight, rallied across the nation for civil rights.
And even at an age when they're grappling with their own fragile sexuality, teens weren't afraid to stand up for the classmate who had been different.
"In middle school, you don't think about your own sexuality so much as you think of what society thinks is normal for kids, and you try to blend in," said 18-year-old Luis Roman, a gay community college student and youth leader for the Gay-Straight Alliance, an advocacy group active on high school and middle school campuses.
"So for these kids to come out and say that just because he was gay, that isn't a reason to get shot, that was mind-blowing to see that courage, for kids to stand up.
"Unfortunately, it took something of this level to make people realize there are gay people, there are lesbians, there are bisexuals, and they're part of our society."
The slaying of 15-year-old Lawrence King on Feb. 12 and the reaction to it illustrated a social shift characterized by gay youths "coming out" younger and their straight counterparts learning the art of tolerance.

"This was one of those turning points in society," he said. "It was a reality shock for everybody. They realized, `Hey, people are being bullied, and we're not doing anything about it."'
But even with an estimated 35,000 openly gay students in the Los Angeles Unified School District - a number based on general population statistics - teenagers, school officials, private counselors and advocates agree there's a long road ahead to wipe out discrimination.

I'm not surprised. Kids will do just about anything they are encouraged to do and applauded for. If we declared cannibalism to be an identity and gave its practitioners special rights and protections in schools, they'd be doing that too.
Bullying takes many forms. A gay boy flirting with a straight boy is a bully. A lesbian girl roughing up a bookworm in gym class is a bully. But these bullies will be tolerated...no, accepted.
YOu forgot a word “encouraged”
Remember, it’s all about PRIDE!
Let’s start with the Madaona/Britney kiss.
Then, move on to school curricula and news media that “normalize” deviant behavior.
The internet, predatory adults......
"Im thuperrrrrrrr, thankthh for athking!"
There.
Kids openly gay behaving like perverts earlier than ever
Kids encouraged to act like perverts earlier than ever.
Here, it seems many think being gay is a fad upon which they jump on and grab attention. Sadly, they haven’t a clue.
Thank you Pee Wee Herman.
why not give it a try?

Then when they experiment with homosexuality, they are told the lie that once a homosexual, they are always a homosexual.
This is the article from the AP news a few days ago. It says the the adolescent came to school wearing make-up, earrings and high heels. Why is this permitted in any school? Especially for a boy?? He would flirt with the boys who made fun of him. Where are the protections for the normal kids? I think that being gay or lesbian is a personality aberration. According to psychologists today it is nothing but a variation on normal. Normal? The left wing of our medical profession is being openly destructive to the standards that most people appreciate.
In the old psychology, things like intelligence were said to be mainly hereditary. Because IQ tests seemed to favor certain privileged groups, Marxists started to reject heredity and intelligence test and say everything was environmental. Now they want to say homosexuality is all hereditary. What gives?
I don’t think homosexuality is completely hereditary OR environmental. There might be a small percentage that really can’t change and ARE born that way, but a much larger group that was either not that way to begin with or chose a heterosexual path and liked it. Most 7-10 year olds didn’t used to even be thinking about their sexual orientation, though. I do know one mother that keeps asking her 12 year old if she’s gay. I think she’s still too young to be thinking of that and her mother should stop asking her that. But the schools should stop confusing kids this way.
Crossdressing is definitely environmental. We are born naked.
The decision to deliberately wear the clothes of the opposite sex for a thrill is the wearer’s.
Well...duh....teach it to them in school, on TV, in movies, and what do you expect??????
The WEIRDEST thing is that kids seem to be coming out more aggressively in poorer, urban school districts. You basically have a “homothug” subculture in NYC and Newark, whereby young black and Latino men “come out” but still project outward ultra-masculinity in order to survive. Don’t get me started on the teen lesbian gangs from Newark who like to hang out near the Hudson on the weekends. They all look like younger versions of Donna Brazille with du rags.
That’s slightly above the percentage that the most reputable study has marked - 3%. Of course some urban areas probably have higher, some fewer.
Exactly. Sexuality is a learned behavoir. As to what level of pervertion you take that behavoir to is another story.
When Supreme Ruth Bader Meinhof Ginsberg was chief counsel for the ACLU, she was trying to lower it to about 13.
