Living wills and a plan: note, I am offering this all up for discussion and contemplation, not for recommendation...

EL PASO, Texas -- It's hard to forget the story of Terri Schiavo, a brain-damaged Florida woman without a plan for her medical care. As a result, a judge made the decision to either keep her on feeding tubes or pull the tubes and let her die.

"Families go through some agonizing times trying to know what their loved ones want if they haven't had that conversation ahead of time," said Connie Crawford, an Assistant County Attorney.

So the County Attorney's Office along with Thomason Hospital have teamed up to spread the word about letting your family know what you want to do in the worst of situations.......

MINNEAPOLIS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--A new national survey indicates that Americans are more likely to talk with their children about drug use or sex than with a seriously ill parent about their end-of-life wishes. The survey, completed by more than 2,300 individuals, was conducted in conjunction with the first National Healthcare Decisions Day (NHDD), April 16, 2008.

“The survey highlights the need for more attention to advance care planning, which is why National Healthcare Decisions Day is so important,” said Sandy Schellinger, Director of Allina Palliative Care. “Americans have made such wonderful progress expanding the dialogue about drugs and sex with their children, yet we still struggle when it comes to talking about something that happens to every one of us—dying.” ...........
