Excerpt =-

Pulitzer-prize winning New York Times correspondent Barry Bearak was one of two foreign reporters arrested in Zimbabwe, where he was covering the elections, the newspaper said Thursday.

"We do not know where he is being held, or what, if any, charges have been made against him," the paper's executive editor, Bill Keller, said in a statement.

"We are making every effort to ascertain his status, to assure that he is safe and being well treated, and to secure his prompt release."

It described Bearak as "an experienced and respected professional who has reported from many places. He won a Pulitzer prize in 2002 for his deeply affecting coverage of daily life in war-torn Afghanistan."

Normally, I’d say that this is a good thing.

However, I’m pretty sure that what little sh*t that is left in that country is about to hit the fan. The press is shut down, the opposition party offices are now occupied, and the thugs are in the streets.

I’m scratching my head here trying to figure out how the NYT is gonna blame Bush for this reporters arrest. I’m sure they’ll figure it out. Gotta be a global warming angle or maybe Joe Wilson went to Zimbabwe back in the 90’s.

New York Times reporter arrested in Zimbabwe

How is this possible, I'm sure that the NYT supports every move Robert Mugabe and his government made.

I think the reporter is based out of Johannesberg, this is just plain thuggery re: claims of lack of accreditation on the part of the Mugabe goons squad.

He seems to have reported mostly objectively. A compilation of his work can be found Here.

I don't know anything about this reporter, but I feel bad for him. I'd be scared to death if it were me!

Prayers for his safety.

I remember when the initial reports of Daniel Pearl abduction in Pakistan were posted, and a few people were happy about it.

If Bearak is mistreated as many of Mugabe's opponents have been, it will be outrageous and grounds for more sanctions against the Mugabe regime.

Mugabe has never really rolled out the welcome mat to journalists......

Zim to tighten media laws (subversive material of foreign origin targeted in clampdown)
