But yesterday one motorist offered what must be a unique reason why he should keep his licence.
Mohammed Anwar said a ban would make it difficult to commute between his two wives and fulfil his matrimonial duties.
His lawyer told a Scottish court the Muslim restaurant owner has one wife in Motherwell and another in Glasgow - he is allowed up to four under his religion - and sleeps with them on alternate nights.
He also needed his driving licence to run his restaurant in Falkirk, Stirlingshire.
Airdrie Sheriff Court had heard that Anwar was caught driving at 64mph in a 30mph zone in Glasgow, fast enough to qualify for instant disqualification.
Anwar admitted the offence, but Sheriff John C. Morris accepted his plea not to be banned and allowed him to keep his licence.
Instead, he was fined £200 and given six penalty points.
Lorna Jackson, from the road safety charity Brake, called the decision "astonishing".
She said: "Regardless of the number of wives or businesses this man drives to, he broke a law which is there to protect everyone.
"Travelling just a few miles over the limit in a 30mph zone can be the difference between life and death if you hit someone, let alone driving at more than twice the speed limit.
"Drivers know the law, and they know the punishment they could face when they break it.
"For the courts to allow someone to keep their licence when they have so blatantly flouted the law and put peoples' lives at risk, on the basis of an excuse such as this, is astonishing."
Anwar, wearing a suit and an open-neck shirt, had made no comment during his five-minute court appearance, apart from confirming his identity.
But last night, speaking from his restaurant Sanam, he said: "It is true I have two wives.
"Muslim men are allowed up to four. But I am not a religious leader and it is not my place to comment.
"As a matter of respect to my wives I would not comment on my home life.
"The sheriff did not ban me because I need my licence to run my business, although my wives were also part of the decision."
The court had heard that Anwar was on his way home from Falkirk to his Glasgow wife on August 21, 2007, when he was caught by city police using a hand-held speed camera.
His lawyer, Paul Nicolson, said: "He realises his licence is at risk, but this is an unusual case and is very anxious to keep his driving licence.
"He has one wife in Motherwell and another in Glasgow and sleeps with one one night and stays with the other the next on an alternate basis.
"Without his driving licence he would be unable to do this on a regular basis.
"He is also a restaurant owner and has a restaurant in Falkirk, which he has had for the past 30 years.
"He has had a clean driving licence until now, and on this particular evening was on his way home after a busy evening at his restaurant."
Anwar's successful plea joins a long list of unusual excuses heard in the courts down the years.
Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson was cleared of illegally driving on a motorway hard shoulder because he said he was rushing to a toilet.
David Beckham also escaped a ban after arguing he had to break the speed limit to escape a photographer.
[We have footbaths in taxpayer funded schools, schools that change their curriculum for muslims, prayer rooms in schools etc. ]
While I am against that also, at least it is not breaking a law that everyone else would be prosecuted for breaking.

(That said.. .it is bloody insane; and you just may be right; but I hope not. Like to think the point of power is in the 'present'; and that we can effect change. (Will say, that while Repubs less than perfect; NO Demrat should ever be voted into power for ANYthing.)
No question, the wolves are now in control of the 'chicken house. As per last post and 'our' perspective; don't know if 'we' must ride down the slippery slope indefintiely - if even into damning prophesies, as per some posters perspective - or whether enough of the still 'reason-capable' can effect change.
No doubt, in my mind; that the success of a 'Hillary' or an 'Obama'; would either be America's final call; or it's last biggest wake-up call.

So, lest anyone get exercised by the insult of at least one of Mohammed Anwar's wives not being deprived of HIS matrimonial obligations; or just by the possibility that Anwar is the receipient of some ROP favortism - we are gently reminded that Beckham was given a pass as well. Albeit, for fleeing 'paparrazi'.
Moral relativism is a beautiful thing; just as a 'flat earth' must be. . .and as well, must be, for those those two-dimensional creatures that live on it.
Usually, IF I feel Scotland and/or Britain is getting a raw deal here, I will defend her to the upmost, as a Scot and Brit.
But this court decision is just lunacy.
All I can hope is that a higher court looks again at the decision or the Attorney General for Scotland does, due to the public outcry...
Well, for one thing it’s against the law for us to have multiple wives. So, he gets a pass on breaking a law (speeding), because he gets a pass on breaking another law (bigamy) because he’s a muslim. I would like “Equal protection under the law”, meaning, one set of laws that EVERYBODY must comply with. Fortunately he’s in Britain, so the fact they are lost does not directly impact me.

I will be so bold as to predict that parties such as the BNP are the only hope that white/formerly-Christian Europeans have left.
EVERY other party will appease and accomodate the growing Muslim threat until those countries topple to the rule of Islam. EVERY ONE.
As infuriating as it seems (considering the greatest progress in the West in values, principles and culture has come from the English-speaking peoples of the world) the British - despite their relatively small numbers of Islamics, vis-a-vis that of, say, the French - seem to be rushing headlong towards self-destruction of their culture and their nation. And this time around, there may not appear a giant of Churchillian rhetoric and resolve through whom the British can cast off their Chamberlain-like obsession of falling headlong in advance of the Muslim onslaught, and thus save themselves.
The nations of Western Europe in general, and Great Britain in particular, are rapidly approaching that point at which the only political parties that demonstrate a desire to protect their borders, culture, and ethnic makeup and heritage are those whose primary themes are nationalistic, exlusive, and all-but-undeniably racist. It gives us pause to face this gritty, unpalatable reality, but one of the tenets of conservatism is that reality should be recognized for what it is and accepted, regardless.
If we are willing to accept that, the next logical questions to ask are: If the actions such nationalistic, exculsionary and racialist governments choose to take in order to preserve their nations and cultures to the exclusion of the non-western peoples and cultures become extreme, is it acceptable and desirable for them to be taken, or not? Is it permissible to save a culture from extinction at all costs, or is it not?
So far, few Europeans (or perhaps even few of us here, even in this very forum) have confronted those issues head-on. And they ARE issues that will have to be faced - if not now, before too many more years have passed.
What constitutes acceptable behavior, when confronted with a struggle that is existential to its roots?
I will answer the question I just posed above. If an individual is attacked physically, by an attacker using deadly force, it is a given (at least amongst most in this forum, I presume) that the person has a right to fight back for his or her life using any and all possible means in order to protect their own life.
By any and by all possible means.
Does such a right of self-defense extend to an entire nation, an entire culture?
I believe it does.
This becomes the existential question before Western Europe, and Britain. You have within your midst, in growing numbers, a culture which is determined to destroy your own and the values you hold most dear, to the point of submission and even death. They will use any and all possible means and methods to achieve their victory, and they will not give up until they HAVE achieved it.
What will you do to stop them, and where will the “lines of engagement” be drawn? Particulary when your enemy does not draw such lines?

The technology company I work for employs a lot of foreign born people. Not sure under what circumstances permit them to be here (USA) but I can tell you this....they fully enjoy the high livings standards, economic opportunities and lifestyles this country offers but at the same time are generally disdainful, if not resentful, of the United States. At first I thought maybe I was misreading their sentiments but its become abundantly clear by now that most are not genuinely thankful to be living here.
