To move away from the simplistic, here is a website of stats upon stats for the school where this particular student decided to beat up her teacher.

Reginald F. Lewis (#419)

It is one-sixth of a totally out-of-control 3000 student warehouse that was divided up about 5 years ago in an attempt to make school a bit more personal for the students.

My post was in regard to insinuation that ALL public schools are like this one. The fact that this one is a hell hole says nothing about other public schools, and should not be used as an example of all other public school.

I had one student who was pulled from school to *home school* only to return a year later and tell me that she had not been home schooled, but had spent the year babysitting for her Mom’s new baby. She was way behind, ended up getting pregnant that year and never finished high school. Didn’t get married either. So, I guess she did learn SOMETHING in her year off. Shall I tout her as a typical homeschooler? No, I wouldn’t do that because I realize that one story does not show the entire picture.

Those "small learning communities" actually make things worse. The peer group solidarity becomes even more powerful and these kids know no loyalty to anyone but their friends. We have students on tracks, and it actually gives them a semi-gang mentality right away.

"A Track sucks!!!"

"F&*^ you, you B!$#&, C track sucks!!!"
