New satellite imagery exposed a site where Iran was developing long-range ballistic missiles, the Times of London reported Friday.
According to the report, on February 4, Iran announced it had launched a "research rocket" as part of its space program. Experts have estimated since then, however, that the rocket launch was in fact a field test of Shihab-type ballistic missile.
But four days after the launch another intriguing feature of the test became apparent: analysis of photographs taken by the Digital Globe QuickBird satellite indicated that the launch site of Kavoshgar 1, as the Shihab missile was dubbed by the Iranians, is also the site where Iran is busy developing ballistic missiles with a range of about 6,000 km.
The site, about 230 km southeast of Teheran, was previously unknown and its link with the Iranian weapons program was revealed by Jane's Intelligence Review after the images were studied by a former Iraq weapons inspector.
Using a space program as a façade for a weapons program was the path chosen by Korea until it declared it had passed the nuclear weapon threshold.
Geoffrey Forden, a research associate at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, said that there was a recently constructed building on the site, about 40 meters in length, which was similar in form and size to the Taepodong long-range missile assembly facility in North Korea.
Jane's Proliferation editor Avital Johanan said analysis of the Iranian site indicated that Teheran may be about five years away from developing a 6,000 km ballistic missile. This would tie in with American intelligence estimates and underlines why President Bush wants the Polish and Czech components of the US missile defense system to be up and running by 2013.

But they are just for peaceful purposes, I’m sure........
bttt
Wow, that’s a long missile.
It should have read “Iran developing 6,000-km Range Missile.”
Ping.
Just wondering when we get the big surprise a la India, Pakistan and N. Korea where one day we wake up to a successful test of the weapons that are still five years off.
I hope they do build one and launch it at someone. We’ll spool up a dozen Minuteman ICBM’s and return the favor. No more worrying about trying to establish a democracy in a Middle East country like we struggle with in Iraq. Iran will be easy to occupy because it will be a wasteland....
I agree.....how can a missle system be used for peaceful purposes.......
If you want peace, prepare for war?............
LOL That’s the same thing I was thinking.
That thing is huge!!
I guess....
End of nightmare.
I’m sure the CIA is right on top of events, as usual (not).
of course...the only enemy (of the Liberal Democrat National Committee); the CIA , Is willing to stop is GWB ...et al
- Ignore by not reporting on it in public press releases or in press briefings, as a politician don't talk about it, don't mention it in threat briefings within the ministries of defense..........
- Downplay the significance by saying they don't have many; it'll take a while before they have it, that the payload is low......
- Smooth over in claiming it's for peaceful purposes, that they aren't really the enemy; that we can talk to them.......
LOL, if I still lived in Europe, and I don't thank God, I'd be shaking in my boots. The Russians at least were predictable and not suicidal. Most Europeans are too stupid and live in a denial of reality which gives them some feeling of safety. They think the Cold War is over, and they see the threats in the Middle East as somehow contained and not pertinent to them.
Several years ago Iran was shooting things into orbit. The purpose of this was to demonstrate and test the engineering and technology of orbital mechanics. Irans intent has all along been the development of a long range missile (Missile has a guidance system vs. rocket which does not) and nuclear yield weapon. Near all these tin-pot rouge states have been trying to go down that road! North Korea, Libya, Iraq, Iran, Cuba Hell, in 1986 Libya fired missiles at Italy, missing the intended targets and landing in the Mediterranean already in the late 80s the trend was known. The goal of the rouge state has been for years to develop these military instruments since they give them a strike capability even though they would never be able to project force with land forces into these regions. The whole goal of the rouge state in developing a long range missile is to be able to hold it over the head of Western states such as in Europe particularly. This is insane, since most Europeans dont even perceive this reality for what it is!
Most Europeans while thinking they are cosmopolitan actually think provincially. There is no strategic vision among the people or even respective governments in Europe outside economic realms. In security matters, most of Europe thinks in terms of “their back yard,” with the Balkans already extending to the outer reaches of their universe.
Over time, since the West has chosen inaction (An irrational decision regards Iran), the only viable defense we have is missile defense and policing within the sovereign boundaries of our nations. The most dangerous aspect of this entire problem is that no one wants to see the problem and danger. This allows the problem to grow and fester, spiraling out of control.
Chances are they would hit a muslim
Well, it can produce a lot of heat for both cooking and heating homes, allthough so far it only works for pretty short durations. They're working on it though, I'm sure.
Whoooo baby! Talk about frying bacon.....
Clever B-turds. Develop the missle 1st, then hit the Israelis down the raod. They probably figure they can back off the world from doing anything since all the Euro cities will all be in range of their nuke tipped missles when they hit the Israelis.
