Coalition forces return fire after complex attack in Sadr City (Baghdad)
Multi-National Corps – Iraq ^ | April 12, 2008 | 3rd BCT PAO, 4th Inf. Div. Multi-National Division – Baghdad PAO

Posted on 04/11/2008 9:01:28 PM PDT by mdittmar

BAGHDAD – Multi-National Division – Baghdad soldiers, in a combined operation with Iraqi Army soldiers, killed several criminals in eastern Baghdad after their convoy was attacked by multiple road side bombs, and small-arms fire from adjacent high rise buildings April 11.

At approximately 9 p.m., soldiers from 1st Combined Arms Battalion, 68th Armor Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division soldiers, supporting Iraqi Army soldiers from the 42nd Brigade, 11th IA Div., killed two criminal snipers, two criminals firing rocket propelled grenades, and multiple others from a nearby building where soldiers were taking RPG and machine gun fire.

At the same time, soldiers from 1st CAB, 68th AR were transporting barriers, in support of Iraqi Army soldiers establishing a checkpoint, when two vehicles in the convoy were damaged when they struck more than six improvised explosive devices.

Small-arms fire, including sniper fire, machine-gun fire and RPGs were fired from buildings overlooking the road. Iraqi Army soldiers and 1-68 AR soldiers immediately returned fire with 7.62mm and 25mm small arms, killing at least four Special Groups members.

Secondary explosions were observed from the building immediately after, possibly indicating arms and munitions were stored in the building.

Small-arms fire continued to come from nearby buildings until 1st CAB, 68th AR engaged the buildings with two 122mm rounds from a M1A2 Abrams tank, killing two criminals and ending the small-arms attack.

At approximately 10:20 p.m., Airmen assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 3rd BCT, operating an unmanned aerial vehicle reconnaissance platform identified three criminals emplacing additional IEDs.

The UAV fired one Hellfire missile, killing all three criminals.

“The most important part about what happened is that this was a combined mission, only two vehicles were damaged, no U.S. or Iraqi Army soldiers were seriously injured, and we went on to complete our mission,” said Maj. John Gossart, executive officer, 1st CAB, 68th AR, 3rd BCT, 4th Inf. Div.

“We are ever vigilant against criminals who commit random acts of violence and we will relentlessly hunt down these criminals who hide among Iraq’s law-abiding people.”

Is Maqtada al-Sadr in Sadr city or is he back in Iran hiding behind the skirts of Ahmadinejad?

Yesterday or maybe the day before there was an article posted on FR that talked about these thugs planning for mischief in broad daylight. The article talked like these idiots were operating in a vacuum. Like nobody else knew what these thugs were planning.

The article was strange in it's shallowness.

"Small-arms fire continued to come from nearby buildings until 1st CAB, 68th AR engaged the buildings with two 122mm rounds from a M1A2 Abrams tank, killing two criminals and ending the small-arms attack."

Yeah, that'll finish the job.

Finally, they are using the correct terms to describe these thugs -- criminals.

The traitorous AP has been using other terms which seem to suggest the good guys are really the bad guys...

Maybe the AP is filled with traitors... Maybe that is something we already know here at FREEREPUBLIC... (So what else is new...)

The article was strange in it's shallowness.

You should note who wrote the article...

For one thing, our armed forces should not and did not information about operating procedures or INTEL about exact information so as to NOT expose our forces.

Of course, if we had an Al Qaeda reporter embedded, he/she would be giving detailed information on how to attack US/Iraqi forces...

I think in the past we may have Al Qaeda reporters embedded with our troops or ones that were VERY, VERY sympathetic to Al Qaeda in their reporting...

FYI

Former government officials have recently been called before a federal grand jury and confronted with phone records documenting calls with a reporter who covers intelligence issues at The New York Times, according to people with detailed knowledge of the investigation.
A former official who was called before the grand jury in Alexandria, Va., said that he was shown extensive phone records that documented the date and duration of conversations with James Risen, a Times reporter in Washington, and that prosecutors were trying to identify Mr. Risen’s sources. Mr. Risen is fighting a grand jury subpoena for testimony about his sources for a 2006 book on the Central Intelligence Agency...

The grand jury witness, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he did not want to draw new attention to himself, and others with knowledge of the investigation say it is unclear whose phone records were obtained by the Justice Department ..

That’s the nature of the war that all the peacemongers are forcing rational and reasonable people to consider.

There is an anecdotal account that anybody who cares can find, whereby some big news anchor type guy (dunno if it was Koppel, or Rather), or even whomever, it really doesn’t matter. The salient point that came out of the interview was if they were embedded with N. Koreans and became aware of imformation that would injure or kill U.S./allied troops.

The big-name anchor desk reporter said it was his duty to get the inside scoop about what was to happen rather than prevent bloodshed by notifying U.S. service personell. That I’m almost certain, except for the least of the jaded among us, would be old news.

Yesterday, the local ABC affiliate showed a video of a drone taking out some a-holes. I was surprised to see that on the local news.

Whoa, what do we have for heavy weapons if 25mm is considered "small arms"? :)

Secondary explosions were observed from the building immediately after

I love secondary explosions.

A big Air Force Salute to US and Iraqi Army troops.

I also hate the use of the word "Criminals" to describe terrorists. At minimum they should be called Sadrist thugs, if that they be.

He hides behind his own skirts, and most likely he's hiding behind those of Iranian Supreme Leader, Grand Ayatollah Khamenei in Qom

Khamenei

His sock puppet, Al-Sadr

?????

M1A1 and M1A2 Abrams main armament is the 120mm M256 smoothbore gun.

I disagree. Criminals are a matter for police and courts to deal with. These are terrorists, and illegal enemy combatants, something to be dealt with by whatever means are at hand, such the Abrams, and Hellfires used in this instance.
