My local board of supervisors donated $10K to the Red Cross, very generous with my tax money i suspect. Here is my letter to the editor:

BOARD DONATES TO RED CROSS

Let's see now 5 supervisors on the board donated a total of $10,000. that is a very generous donation of an average of $2000 each. I commend them for their generosity, assuming they personally made the donation and didn't use my taxes to make a donation in their name. If I was forced to participate in that donation against my will, I demand to know the specific law that allows that. If they cannot cite a specific law that allows them to donate the taxpayers money then they should be forced to cough it up to reimburse us taxpayers.

The Red Cross is federally chartered, is part of the Geneva Convention and Treaties of the Red Cross. It has official functions in times of war and disaster. It is not just a charity.

“On May 11, 2007, H.R. 1681, the American National Red Cross Governance Modernization Act, was signed into law by
President George W. Bush. This marked the completion of a comprehensive assessment of Red Cross governance launched on February 24, 2006, by its Board of Governors. The following documents have been updated to reflect the approved reforms to Red Cross governance.”

I’m guessing your county, like most counties, awards grants every year to local service agencies who provide local emergency and supportive services.

My son just sent me a copy of the mississippi law that specifically allows counties to donate to the Red Cross $100 per every million dollars of assessed valuation in the county per year. this is a poor county but it probably does have at least $100 million worth of assessed value so guess this donation is lawful. still pisses me off. The churches in this area did much more than any other organization to help storm victims.
