Pierce County sheriff's deputies found a semi-automatic handgun, remnants of liquid explosives and bombs packed with nails while combing through an obliterated South Hill home Tuesday -- and were relieved that there weren't more victims after a registered sex offender detonated explosives there Monday night.
Authorities say they found the body of that man, 26, who they believe was killed in the explosion, which blew off the top of the two-story house about six miles southeast of Tacoma.
The couple who own the house called police about 11 p.m. Monday, saying the man was being strange and making explosives, Pierce County Sheriff's Department spokesman Ed Troyer said. The couple told detectives that they met their roommate through a Craiglist ad.
When police entered the house, the man grabbed some bottles and bolted from the kitchen. He blasted heavy metal music from upstairs as deputies realized that a duffle bag he left contained explosive devices.
Deputies evacuated, called for backup and were waiting on a bomb squad and a negotiator when the house exploded.
"Our deputies on the next house plot were covered in beauty bark," Troyer said. "Blinds from the top floor were blown 75 to 100 feet."
Firefighters prevented damage to four neighboring houses, which were evacuated.
"He's had some issues with law enforcement over the years," Troyer said of the man, "and actually, from what we're learning, had a rough week leading up to this ... paranoid, changing locks and doing some strange stuff, according to witnesses."
Police said the semi-automatic handgun was found underneath the man's body. His identity is expected to be released this week after a Pierce County Medical Examiner's Office investigation.
"We don't know what he was planning to do with all that stuff," Troyer said. "Explosions were still going off during the fire. ... We're glad there weren't more people killed."

God be thanked that his efforts apparently went off preamturely so it was his own sorry hide that was killed and not others.

Beauty bark is what they call landscape bark in WA. We laughed when we first heard the term, too. We had a next door neighbors that was obsessed with his “beauty bark”. We thought he made up the term because he was so nuts. He poisoned our cat because it kept scratching at his beauty bark.
Ya think guys like this are going to avoid using unregistered e-mail addresses or screen names?

I heard his name on the radio this morning. One wonders if it was something to do with being on the registry or if it was something else.
I have this thing about the neighbors who allow their kitty’s free reign to poop in my gardens. It is stupid for several reasons. We have plenty of natural predators Coyote and Raccoons that shorten outdoor cats lives radically and then there’s me. I warn the neighbors once, the second time the live trap with a can of tuna comes out and I take the kitty back to the owner in the trap. After that, I take the trapped kitty to the Humane Society. If they still don’t control their cat...it goes away.
The man, identified in the Tacoma News Tribune as 25-year-old Zane Dittman, was killed in the early Tuesday blast....
Troyer says the man was a sex offender. He also reportedly had convictions for possessing stolen property, riot with a deadly weapon and unlawful imprisonment.
Four years ago a man with that name was sentenced in Spokane for abducting his girlfriend's 10-year-old son.
Well, in this case, the neighbor not only had a cat as well, but he had a dog who pooped all over everyone else’s yard. Someone ended up shooting his dog.
