South Mattis... prior to Old Farm, that was out in the country, I guess. Lots of stuff going in now, they’re breaking ground with things that essentially go all the way out to the (now fenced-in) airport.

We’re just east of Staley, but there are homes even four blocks west of us!

Central Indiana took some kind of stronger wave for some reason...

Harder, maybe, but seemingly not for as long. Here in Vincennes I hit the dial on my stopwatch once it began, and it stopped in 47 seconds.

No...what a strange question...why do you ask?

Maybe you're not paying attention. Every time a fire, or quake or what ever happens on the west coast, it never fails, several toothless morons will always jump in hoping for massive death and destruction. Happens all the time. Hope that explains.

Called the local police and officer on duty thought he might be having caffeine withdrawals.

I am really curious. What were the police supposed to do?

In our era the procedure established by our local county Emergency Management Director was that in the event the community's tornado/disaster warning sirens failed, he'd go outside and fire shots into the air as a backup warning signal.

At least until he ran out of arrows.

5.2 is worthy of mention. Barely.

Just felt a major AS at 10:18AM at Olney. Was reported at 4.5

Noticeable aftershocks could occur for the next two or three days, generally they will slowly diminish in strength.

Worst case scenario would be they start increasing in strength. Even to a small degree, that would not be good.

Why does the Earth “hum?”

http://www.space.com/scienceastronomy/planetearth/space_symphony_000323.html

The apparent answer, revealed in the March 24 issue of the journal Science, is as surprising as the hum itself.

Kiwamu Nishida of the University of Tokyo’s Earthquake Research Institute has, along with colleagues, analyzed 10 years of seismic data and tied the seismic waves to similar oscillations in the atmosphere.

Inaudible sound waves in the lower atmosphere push and pull on the ground, the researchers say, creating coupled “sound” waves, or seismic waves, inside Earth. The initial source, as yet not determined, could be changes in atmospheric pressure. The researchers also did not rule out possible oceanic sources, such as pounding waves, as the cause of Earth’s hum.

It's an attention-getter when it happens when you're on top of a railroad boxcar. Which is where I was when the similar intensity June '87 quake hit.

So far, no fatalities reported hereabouts.

If you are sitting in a hard seat chair in math class you can detect a 3.0 easily.

Worst case scenario would be they start increasing in strength. Even to a small degree, that would not be good.

Locally we are also watching for other indications, such as the rivers flowing in reverse, or the church bells in Pittsburg ringing from a 'quake centered on southern Illinois/Missouri.

Which has happened before. And the longer it is until the New Madrid fault area releases the built-up stresses, the more intense that eventual release will be.

No doubt the engineering students at West Point can do a little better, easily detecting a 4.0

I slept through the quake. My daughter woke up, though.

Then about an hour ago there was an aftershock here.

I'm in St. Louis.

“Locally we are also watching for other indications, such as the rivers flowing in reverse, or the church bells in Pittsburg ringing from a ‘quake centered on southern Illinois/Missouri.”

If that starts those will the least of your worries. You will have a whole lot more on your mind, like standing up or wondering if the ceiling is coming down.

Why does the Earth “hum?”

Because it doesn't know the words?
