Obama shows irritation when questioned over Hamas

WASHINGTON (AFP) — Democratic White House contender Barack Obama could not hide his irritation Monday when asked by a reporter what he thought about former president Jimmy Carter's meeting with Hamas last week.

"Why can't I just eat my waffle?" the Illinois senator said as he ate breakfast in Scranton, Pennsylvania, according to MSNBC television pictures.

Pressed again for an answer, he replied: "Just let me eat my waffle."

Obama, who is battling Hillary Clinton for the Democratic presidential nomination, criticized Carter last week for seeking to meet with leaders of the Islamist movement, which he said was "a terrorist organization."

He told a synagogue in Philadelphia that while it was legitimate to meet with the leaders of states such as Syria or Iran, even if they were hostile to Israel, "Hamas is not a state" and did not warrant such a move.

At a public meeting Sunday, Obama also noted the difficulty of negotiating a peace deal between the Israelis and Palestinians where one group representing Palestinians -- Hamas, who run the Gaza Strip -- refused to recognize Israel.

Carter said Monday that Hamas had told him it would recognize Israel's right to live in peace if a deal is reached and approved by a Palestinian vote, after two meetings in Damascus with exiled Hamas chief Khaled Meshaal.

But hours after he spoke, Meshaal told a press conference in Damascus that Hamas would not recognize the Jewish state and would insist on the right of some 4.5 million Palestinian refugees to return to Israel.

There’s a good political joke in there somewhere.

Sounds like Obama is bitter, and clinging to his waffles.

Much ado about nothing... Israel is not going back to the 1967 borders and will not take in four-and-half million new Arab citizens...

Wish they had asked me. I would have said

'Jimmy Carter is a senile old coot and has neither the authority nor is it his business to negotiate diplomatic settlements, and his meeting with an acknowledged terrorist organization merely confers false legitimacy on them.'

Perhaps even worse; Hamas conferred false legitimacy on Jimmuh Cawtuh by meeting with him.

Some of us believe - Obama has waffled too much already.

Way to go, Jimmie.

"There’s a good political joke in there somewhere." SO, Obama was out waffling again was he?

(I’m surprised Jimmy didn’t offer himself to Hamas as a prisoner exchange.)

Obama is losing his cool, what he meant to say to the reporter was “I’m not going to answer, can’t you see I’m having a hard enough time sitting here eating waffles with the bitter small town common people, leave me alone so I can finish up and get the hell out of here”

A great secret has been revealed. Obama needs his waffle in before he gets his waffle (speaking to the press) on.

Terrorists are just another "distraction."

Waffles are real (but not as real as arugula, of course).

Obama was right. Not appropriate to talk about a fruitcake in a waffle house.
