Los Angeles 'is a Third World city'
Daily Telegraph (UK) ^ | 23/04/2008 | Staffer

Posted on 04/22/2008 7:44:40 PM PDT by PotatoHeadMick

Los Angeles is becoming a "Third World city" with immigrants making up half its workforce, says a new study.

A third of immigrants have not graduated from high school and 60 per cent do not speak English fluently, the Migration Policy Institute found.

It said this left immigrants ill-equipped to fill California's fastest-growing occupations, such as computer software engineering and nursing. The organisation added that as the so-called baby boomers reach retirement age, a similar pattern will spread across the US.

Ernesto Cortes Jr, of the Industrial Areas Foundation, a think-tank that specialises on social change, claimed Los Angeles was at a crossroads.

"The question is are we going to be a 21st century city with shared prosperity, or a Third World city with an elite group on top and most on near poverty wages?" he said.

And yet, see how much higher LA is in many categories over the national average?

Does a “98% brown” Huntington Park mean that L.A. is a third world city? I’m just trying to make the connection with the assertion of the Daily Telegraph article.

It does if the majority of them are Illegal.

And this Telegraph article is basically a rewrite of the LA Times article from Sunday. The local schools do not produce the talent required to run businesses, that is why employers recruit from out of state....and out of the country to fill positions.

12.4 murders?

Actualy, there wasn't. You're thinking of Chicago where they had 20 shootings in 24 hours the other day.

Maybe you don't get what per capita means. It means for every 100,000 people ya got in Richmond, there are 38.8 murders. In LA there are only 12.4.

You get that right?

Heck ... there were that many last weekend. Latest 2006 Crimes per 100,000 People:

Richmond, VA Los Angeles, CA National
Murder: 38.8 12.4 7
Forcible Rape: 38.83 27.3 32.2

Give me a *major* city, or comparable size in another state you want to compare.

I’m game.

Some of these posters need to travel to some real third world cities and countries. Flies everywhere, dead animals in what passes for roads, mud everywhere if it is in a wet climate and people living in anything available.

I was just in Jamaica and all though it isn't quite a cesspool, it is poor all over. The wealthy section of Montego Bay is only about 5% of the city, the rest is small houses with wooden shutters, no glass. I did notice that even the smallest house had bars on the doors and windows.
